What would be your budget bottle of choice to share with buddies for the holidays (you don't have to pick Mellow corn or Wild turkey, but I thought they would be nice)?

I'm guessing a lot of people are gonna rag on the mellow corn.

Assuming a WT 101 purchase price of $20, others I would consider are: BT, OWA, and OGD 114. With that said, WT 101 is a quite worthy.

For less than $20, if they are available in your area: VOB, AAA 10 YO, OGD BIB, FC, and Old Ezra 101.

What's this Yellow Corn?

For $20, I'd get mellow corn and VOB BiB to share. That'll put you more around $25, but it'll give some variety and both are nice pours.

I picked up a HH white label BiB yesterday as well and liked it. A very mild 100 proofer for $9.29; that might be a bit more palatable (than VOB BiB) to people who prefer a smooth bourbon.

I just picked up a bottle of FR yellow label, $20 here in Mass., as the gifts budget just ate up the whiskey budget.

I haven't had Mellow Corn, though I know it has some fervent fans. WT101 is OK, but I'd go with OWA. Strong, yet sweet enough for someone not used to drinking bourbon. WSR if you don't want it quite as strong.

If I were you I would head to Binny's and grab a bottle of their WSR as IMO it's a very easy bourbon to drink and a great gateway bourbon!

I've been on a Mellow Corn kick, as of late, so that's where I would go. It's only $12.99 in my state, and while it's 100 proof, it goes down like liquid candy.

EWSB sells for about the price of WT101 around these parts. OWA, Old Ezra 101, and OGD 114 were excellent suggestions as well.

I second those suggestions and throw in any of the HH BIBs if they're available in your area. Mellow Corn is good stuff, so I'd pick up a bottle of that along with one of the other suggestions and see what your friends like most.

How is it possible that you don't already have a bottle of both stashed in your bunker? Remember, ...this is a "professional" bourbon drinking website...and even though you might be new....it is up to each of us to buy all the bourbon we can, even if you don't drink it immediately.

OK, all kidding aside  . A handle of Mellow Corn is like...$15. A 750ml of Turkey is around $20. The choice is clear....Mellow Corn. Especially, if you have to supply a bunch of hard drinking buddies. Mellow Corn also makes great cocktails...incase you have some ladies handy.

Some other options from what used to be Barton are an excellent alternative for flavor to cost ratio: And some are in Bib .....

Ky Tavern, Tom Moore, Ky Gentleman, Very Old Barton, Colonel Lee, Barclay,s, Walkers Deluxe, 1792 Ridgemont Reserve, Fleischmanns Rye, Ten High.

15 a handle of Mellow corn? It's 14 for a 750 around these parts.

Saw some in Va., on a website, for about $9 a 750, this morning.

It might be time for you to find a new store...or see if your current store will offer some sort of cash or case discount. Many stores in Austin will offer cash discount, or buy two get 10% off, or mix and match a case.

It's 10 for a 750 mL here. I've not noticed a handle before, but TPS lists it for 20 - so still a clear choice over WT101 (if you're following the logic above).

WT101 is a nice choice, its one I would recommend if your buddy isn't the biggest whisky fan, its a nice whisky, thats quite likable.

However in the $20 range I would reach for Buffalo Trace or Bulleit, and in the sub $20 range I would grab W.L. Weller Special Reserve. But that's just me.

I don't believe that I agree with this.

WT is known for being very spicy and robust. Neither is in the wheel-house for a newbie or non whiskey fan. If, your guests are, at least, semi-experienced...then WT will be fine. But, I believe it is too advanced for someone with soft expectations.

Personally, I really like WT(mostly their rye 101) for its robust and nonchill filtered goodness. The lower proof, chill filtered versions just don't have the oomph I am looking for.

So is it filtered at all?

And ya, my buddies are bourbon drinkers.

Yes, WT products above 100 proof are filtered. Just not chill filtered. Chill filtering takes away more flavor than just particle filtering, generally.

I regularly stock my friends hoses with OGD BIB or Eagle Rare. I actually enjoy both of them, and because they are right around $20, I dont mind if they are mixed. And Iwhen I come back to their house theer is a bottle i like there, if I left it up to them they would be buying me JBW.

I have never dropped off a bottle of OWA and that is in the same price range, I think the reason is that I think it would bother me more to see someone mix with that.
