Personally, I would always rather have WT12...but, this seems like a nice alternative. Other than the age difference of a year and proof by 1 degree, I wonder how similar it is to WTAS(?). Also, since no Tribute is to be found any longer, this seems a logical alternative for those of us who cannot find any of the former...thoughts?

All in all though, I do agree it is overpriced as evidenced by how much sits on the shelf...at least in my local circuit riding rounds. In comparison to other 'premium' bourbons on the current market though, I cannot fault Austin, Nichols for trying to expect the same in terms of price. Maybe 'same' though is more around the $70 level...to which I cannot disagree.

I'm probably not the best opinion to rely on because I am not a big WT fan. However, while pricey, I definitely enjoy it and plan to replace current bottles with empty if they're still around at current prices.

IMO, the Tradition is over-oaked and over-priced. And the packaging is kinda "downtown Las Vegas", over-the-top.

The WTAS is a better whiskey and a better buy. YMMV

Unfortunately, the only WT I have available is 80, 101, and Rare Breed. If someone knows where in Ohio to get the others, I would appreciate the heads up. :cool:

And I'm guessing these were both made with a one time production run up to this point, or are they bottling it yearly/monthly/etc?

I like the tradition quite a bit. It's very, very similar to the WTAS. If you told me it was $25 too expensive, I couldn't argue with you.

They are both surprisingly dry, particularly in the finish, with the Tradition being the dryer of the two by some margin. If that is the sort of thing that appeals to you then these are the sort of Bourbons that you will probably find enjoyable. While not high on my list I have some Scotch oriented friends who are very fond of the Tradition while I enjoy an occasional pour of the AS.

The Tribute is a different bird. A sweeter profile with chocolate and cherries in the mix, its a Bourbon worth seeking out and ponying up for, IMHO. As always with statements like this - YMMV.

I have a bottle of WT Tradition ($68 from a PA state store) and just got a bottle of the WT American Spirit ($76 from a MD liquor store). I find them both to be very similar- and no doubt being 1 proof and 1 year different than each other! One thing I did notice is that the WTAS, though being the older of the two, had less aggressive oak flavor. While it was predominant, it didn't have a sharp edge at all and was very good. The Tradition seems to have a bit more tannen to it and more of a coffee and tobacco (??) flavor to it. Neither whiskey is a bad pour by any means and I'm satisfied with my purchase price on both. Not often you can get such long aged, higher proof whiskey for that price!

I had another pour of this tonight, and I have a very tough time answering the title of the thread in any detail. I know I like it, but I have a very tough time coming up with any meaningful tasting notes. It is obviously dry and very complex, but there is a light spice that I associate with something creamier (like eggnog) even though the feel and taste isn't creamy.

Maybe another glass would help.
