So first of al, let me say that the regular small batch BMH is one of my favorite bourbons, although it is usually a treat since I can't buy it in state. I received a bottle of the 16YO for Christmas, and it lives up to expectations. I think I like it a little better than Pappy, although a heads up comparison will be required soon. I'm starting a thread for this reason: a friend who knows my enjoyment of this recently called; he had been talking to an online supplier and when the BMH 16 came up, the comment was: "He'd better enjoy it, because there won't be anymore." Does anyone have any information on this? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Nature of the beast...it would not surprise me. In fact, about nothing surprises anymore. I think the CVI, KBD and like bottlings are pretty much limited in varying degrees over the long haul. Old/New releases, old/new labels, old/new distilleries (lol), etc., are fairly erratic over time in terms of their longevity, provenance, ownership, etc., as well as what is to be found in each bottle/barrel in terms of age, taste, etc. For all we know, the same juice in BMH will (and probably has) turn(ed) up in another mystery label/bottle at some time or another. Probably explains why BMH 16 has just about doubled in shelf price the last few years in my hunting/haunting area. I have seen a lot of dusties at $149 & up.

K&L Wines sent out an e-mail yesterday, claiming the same thing, that BMH16 is done for. They also had a lot of less-likely warnings, like an Eagle Rare and ETL shortage in the near future.

ETL is having a shortage right now, at least in my state.

As for things like BMH, the warnings stand to reason. As the majors are getting short on older stocks, it certainly affects the secondary and tertiary labels.

Here's the excerpt:

"If you thought we were finally coming out of the great American whiskey shortage, I’m sorry to inform you otherwise. We’ve only reached the tip of the iceberg from what I can see. Black Maple Hill 16 is now gone forever from what I can tell. We won’t be seeing that one again. Even the Black Maple Hill Small Batch is in jeopardy, it seems. I’ve been hearing that Elijah Craig 18 is running on thin ice as well. Vintage 17 doesn’t appear to be coming back and we’ve already seen how difficult getting aged expressions from Buffalo Trace has become. I have a feeling that 2012 is only going to get worse for older Bourbon and rye expressions. Both Elmer T Lee and Eagle Rare are currently out of stock, and we’ve heard rumors that Eagle Rare may not be coming back this year. If you’re a fan of older Bourbon, now might be the time to start hoarding. It’s only a matter of time before they all start hurting."

I'm sure the BMH16 is going away. This was at least the 3rd run of 16 year that BMH had done with the prior 2 having been single barrels. I'm sure we will see another 16 year from them at some point down the road. I heard a rumor that an 18 year was next in line but can't confirm that. That one will run out also and be replaced with something. I have seen BMH 11, 14 (a few different versions), 16, 18, 21, and 23 year expressions all come and go. There were others I didn't mention that I never saw. I guess only time will tell as to what the future of BMH will bring us, but my bet is that its something and it won't be inexpensive.

Interesting...I quite like BMH16, glad to have a mostly full one in the bar and one in the bunker. I'll look forward to whatever they release under that label next. I have a small batch open as well. Not as complex, but a nice drink.

Always wondered about the age of ETL. I am sure it is covered here somewhere though. For some reason I thought it was a NAS that was 6-9 yrs old.

That would be my guess as well

I saw one of the Oral History videos with an interview with ETL. He said that he believes the sweet spot is in the 7-9 range and when he selects barrels for his namesake brand that barrel age is what he selects.

Same thought as Jim Rutledge of Four Roses.
