Has anyone tried the bourbons that come in the box- the bourbon heritage collection- the very special old fitzgerald 12 year or the old charter proprieters reserve?

Good? Not so good?

Have only had the slope shouldered OCPR and love it. Really glad I have an extra in the bunker (but disappointed I ONLY have one more). If you are debating on whether or not to purchase, I say jump.

Even if the Old Fitz isn't as good, I believe it's Stitzel-Weller. That's got to count for something provided they aren't asking more than $50-$60.

They're both very good...If I had to put the BHC collection in order by preference they would be:

Weller Centennial Louisville

Weller Centennial Frankfort

Very Special Old Fitz 12yr

Old Charter Proprieter's Reserve 13 Slope Shoulder

George Dickel 12yr

Old Charter Proprieter's Reserve 13 Squat Bottle

IW Harper 15yr

I tried the Old Fitz 12 last weekend, here are my notes but I'm a noob, with a grain of salt of course!

Old Fitzgerald 12 year

Paid: $30.99

Nothing to speak of on the nose, alcohol and oak.. My sniffer may not be that refined. (I should have probably let it sit and open up a bit)

Taste is a 3 trick pony, slightly sweet on the front immediately giving way to what I perceive is a dry musty rye in the middle (even though this is a wheated bourbon) then slowly tapering off to a glorious long light vanilla way in the back. The front and middle are bit uninteresting, but the vanilla is worth waiting for. When I want my vanilla fix, this one has the most overt vanilla I’ve found so far. It reminded me of Yuengling Lager. You drink it for the finish..

Is this a 30 dollar bourbon? I’m still struggling with that one but I do like the vanilla…

I think the BHC VSOF is dull, especially when compared to the Weller Centennial, which was in the same set. The OCPR I think is really great whiskey. The slope is better but square is still good.

I think the VSOF is dull also. I like Weller 12 and OWA as wheaters better. I also like EC12 better.

I know SW juice gets a lot of love around here, and yes, my bottle has BHC on the shrink wrapped neck, but this one just lacks imho.

What Josh says. I passed on both Dickel and IW Harper, when I spotted a few about 4 years ago, due to low fill levels on the Dickel and no interest in the 80 proof Harper.

And what Young Blacksmith says too.

Don't want to start start too much of a thread drift, but its somewhat pertinent. Does anyone know where the juice in the OCPR SS was distilled? I'm not as familiar with the history of the Charter label as others.

I like all of the bottles in the BHC. The VSOF I have is quite good!

Thomas

I agree. I typically like 100 proofers or higher but for 90 it's damn good.

Dohidied it was the Very Special version..

The old edition of VSOF has BHC (Bourbon Heritage Collection) on the neck, the current issue has VS on the neck.

I attached a photo to my post above.. It's most definitely the new version..

I picked up a bottle of OCPR last week when traveling. I had never seen or heard about it up to that point but I have enjoyed the 8 and 12 year old OC stuff that I have tried.

So I believe that Old Charter was distilled at the Belmont Distillery at 17th and Breckenridge St. under the ownership of Schenley before the new Bernheim Distillery was opened in 1992. Does that sound correct to the historians out there?
