Has anyone tried Jesse James (from Jackyl) bourbon? I picked up a bottle last week (14.99 at HyVee) and opened it up. Decent beginning flavor, but one of the harshest finishes I have had.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks....

What is Jackyl?

Rock group - the lead singer's brother owns/runs the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis and there's a weekly reality show that shows the bar during Sturgis.

I caught the show where they were hawking the Jesse James - on stage and at the bar the night the band played.

It's down here on the shelf now but I haven't been compelled to pick it up....

I love the marketing of this stuff -- like they're pitching a tough, grizzled outlaw "manly-man" rockstar whiskey. Can you TAKE this whiskey like a man, like Jesse James can?

Kind of like the marketing idea with Kid Rock and Beam White last year. It's as if to say, "Kid Rock can TAKE this whiskey, can you, sissy?"

A great way to sell harsh, thin whiskey if you've got a lot of it IMO.

I've also not tried it up in WI where I have seen it a bunch of places. The label made me curious but at the price point, I'd rather go with what I know.

I bought a bottle last week for $12.99. Figured even if it was awful it would be a good conversation piece/mixer for guests. Haven't had a reason to open it yet though.

It's bottled by and registered with the LeVecke corporation who identifies itself as a wholesaler distributor of beer and wine and rectifier of distilled spirits with headquarters in Mira Loma, California. They have bottling plants in several location throughout the country. They also put out Origine bourbon. It's your guess where they get their barrels from.

The Jesse James web site promo is pretty hilarious stuff as in "Legally, we need to age Bourbon Whiskey a minimum of two years, but we aren’t in a hurry. We age The Original Jesse James America’s Outlaw Bourbon Whiskey for a minimum of 36 months."

Nuff said.

I don't believe Jesse and Michael Ballard are related.....just close friends.

I saw it in a store last week and the first thing that came to mind was Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo tequila. No thanks.

I got my bottle at the HyVee Grocery store in St. Joseph. I had been looking for a while (since the show came out and they mentioned it was finally released) and this is the first I had run across it.

About the kindest thing I can say about it is that it is not intended for us.

That actually made me laugh out loud and spit a little OFBB 2008!!! Hilarious.

When I saw the thread title, I thought, " really", who cares. Jesse , although a phenomenal bike builder, is an over exposed, so called celebrity. I'm really tired of really tattooed, rude people ..give me a break ..Jesse James bourbon?? Get a life

Now I am confused. Not that it really matters but is the whiskey named after Jesse James Dupre, Jesse James Bullock, or the original Jesse James?

Did I read it's associated somehow ith Jackyl? Haha. Didn't they have some dodgy video in which they turned up to a Walmart carpark and played?

Willy Nelson's Whiskey River wasn't bad, just overpriced for what it was. Same deal with Cabo Wabo. Both were made by the same company. That may be true of this one too, even if it is about $15.

It's Jesse James Dupree, of the band Jackyl. He's an outlaw, you see.

Hmmm. And here all this time I thought he was a lumberjack.

Has there ever been a good spirit created by/for a celebrity? I can't think of one worth drinking.

Not a spirit but my wife & sister-in-law were quite fond of the

Vince Neil 2006 Petite Sirah. If I could find more of that, I'd

grab it up.

Same deal with Cabo Wabo.

Sammy Hagar has a Rum coming out soon. If it gets the love

the tequila did, it might not be half bad.

  • 4 months later...

Happened to be in my local shop when the reps came in to hawk this. The owner asked if I and another bourbon drinker who happened to be there could try it.

Unfortunately (for me), the reps agreed.

I guess Chuck has is right when he says that this isn't for us. This is clearly (and I guess properly ) marketed at the poor college crowd looking for something "badass" to drink that is cheaper than Jack.

They would probably be better off with any of a number of established bottom shelf Bourbons that are better and as cheap if not cheaper, but "Heaven Hill" doesn't sound macho enough, nor does Evan Williams (despite having the Jack Daniels clone of a label) or Ancient Age.

I will say this much... it is an excellent example of why many distillers do not want bottlers to disclose the provenance of their whiskey. No self respecting distiller would want to admit that this, "shot and a beer" bourbon came from the same warehouse as their other quality products.

I guess it is appropriate that they market this as "outlaw" bourbon, because even at its low price point, you are being robbed.
