Located some Handy... Should I buy it?

Ran across 2 lonely bottles of Thomas H. Handy at a local small time store tonight, also had a bottle of Saz Rye. Handy was priced at 79.99, Rye was 25ish..

Is the 2011 Handy worth it?

I've had it and have passed on purchasing it the few occasions I've seen it. But... I'm not a big fan of rye. From what I gather the Handy and the Eagle Rare 17 are the least sought after from the BTAC.

Save your dough and look for the sazerac, higher rated and more scarce. The THH is pretty easily found around my parts. No saz tho.

The Handy seems pretty easy to find around here, but at the $99 that most places want, I have passed so far.

With all due respect to a previous poster, never "buy" or "not buy" a whiskey because it is "higher rated and more scarce".

For my 2 cents, I adore the Handy. It's a barrel proof, knock you in the nose and make your eyes water, type of rye. Frankly, the list of those type of ryes is extremely short. THH is one of my favorite whiskies in my rotation. As is the case with most bourbons, it's ease of discovery and price does vary from area to area. I believe $79.99 has been the target list price for the most recent release, so you're "OK" from the cost side. But, it can still be found for less (upper $50) in some areas.

I would get it. It's a truly unique tasting experience.

$79.99 is what you should expect to pay for the Handy, and like Joe said, it's absolutely delicious and unique in the market. I first had it when I was still pretty inexperienced with rye, and it was very educational for me.

I'd say go for a bottle of the Handy. It makes the best Manhattan and sometimes I do prefer it over Saz 18.

I do totally enjoy a THH, especially after it has been opened and sat 3/4 full.... I can get it here for $60.

Yeah, I'm surprised more people didn't advise you to go for it. 80 dollars is the pretty standard price, but you can often find it for less.

Im not a big fan of the handy but it never hurts to try something new. Buy it and if you dont like it find a friend who does and pass it along.

I would say buy it, because I am a huge fan, but maybe poke around to see if you can find it for a few bucks cheaper. It seems to be the most widely available of the BTAC, and is the only one I ever seem to be able to find on a shelf anywhere.

It's an eye-opening, breath-taking whiskey (not just because of proof). It's a winner that should be a staple for all whiskey lovers.

Yes, $80 is a tad high, but you could "bargain shop" and save about $10 (maybe $15 at most). My best price ever is $65 across 5 different states I've bought it in... $75 is "normal."

Buy it when you see it. It does disappear!

I don't like it much. I found it really sweet, not "knock-you-in-the-mouth" or anything like that. Maybe it had been open too long.

Buy em up. Barrel proof rye? with the popularity that rye is attracting, it will be one of those things everyone "remembers." remember that special bottling of such and such that you'll never see again... and you will have one to drink in good health. IMHO we are just leaving a bourbon/rye glut. It was a dead category commercially no less than five years ago. ten years ago no one drank bourbon or rye in high end restaurants AND I LIVE IN THE SOUTH! sort of...

If you love/like Rye whiskey, you owe it to yourself to acquire at least a bottle of THH. I think it's absolutely fantastic.

BTW, Restaurant Man, Atlanta USED to be part of the South, but they lost that honor when the 1996 olympics came to town. That said, there's still enough Southerness to it to make me miss living there...especially considering where I live now!:grin:

Sorry for the misleading post, I didn't mean to give an opinion to someone that was asking pricepoint rather than rarity. If you drink rye and are worried about price by all means spend your money on a good whiskey. If you plan to make manhattans or what not i would not waste 80.00 on bitters and cherries. Buy ritten or jb and throw whatever u want in a glass. BTAC bottlings aren't made for cocktails. How about a macallan 18 rob roy?

Sorry sjoe, didn't mean to stray anyone away from any drink. I misunderstood the direction of the question. 79.00 is goin rate in Wky and goes for whole BTAC. If you have a chance to buy an interesting bottle and have the means go for it.
