Henry_Hill
Greetings Errbody from good ol' central Ohio! This evening my brother (who is a scotch drinker) and I are going to grab a bottle of bourbon and shoot the breeze. I'm new to the bourbon world and he just recently took interest in it over scotch, so neither one of us has a wide knowledge of the sauce. I'm looking for something midshelf and good for a couple beginners looking to expand their tastes. I've read that wheaters are generally smoother and sweeter, so id probably like to try a wheater. I'll be drinking it neat, with a little water added. On a side note, I seem to really enjoy EWB and Makers (which i believe is possibly a wheater?).Thank you for the assistance,Ty
clingman71
Sadly, in central Ohio, your choices are very limited. If you are certain on wanting a wheater, the only Ohio option worth a damn is Maker's 46. If you were to get to NKY, I would say OWA or Weller 12. If you aren't stuck on a wheater, I would say ETL, now available in Ohio.
Henry_Hill
Well, i'm not dead set on a wheater, just something that will be a good introductory bourb . Something to send me forward in the bourbon world and maybe refine my taste a bit.It sucks that the selection is crappy here in buckeye country =\
Phil T
A few selections readily available : Four Roses small batch or the single barrel, plus Wild Turkey Rare Breed. They are not wheaters, but gather quite a bit of love here. They are excellent and available for $35 or less
clingman71
If you are open to non-wheaters then I reiterate Elmer T Lee. I saw some at Weiland's in Dec.
bad_scientist
If you are open to non-wheaters then I reiterate Elmer T Lee. I saw some at Weiland's in Dec.I second that. Elmer and Pappy converted me from scotch. Elmer, of course, is a cheaper date. It's also good on the rocks, should you feel like experimenting. Young Blacksmith
Not a wheater, but Elijah Craig 12 is one of the best buys for the money in my opinion. Four roses small batch or single barrel and EC12 are two I recommend to drinkers who want to get started in bourbon.
trumpstylz
Buffalo trace and woodford are fairly widely distributed and wouldn't be a bad beginning mid shelfer.
Bigspur2011
I agree with the Woodford, it got me started on bourbon, but if you can find Elmer get it, love every pour of it.
JayMonster
Buffalo trace and woodford are fairly widely distributed and wouldn't be a bad beginning mid shelfer.I can agree with the Buffalo Trace, but I certainly wouldn't recommend Woodford to someone new (or relatively new) to bourbon. Woodford certainly seems to be a love it or hate it affair.
ebo
My part of Ohio must be Bourbon hell. No ETL is available to me anywhere near me, as far as I know (Stark Co.).
