I had previously not been a huge fan of 4 Roses. The only varieties we can get around here are Yellow Label and Small Batch and I've never been able to fall in love with either. I prefer Bulleit to both of them.

On a recent trip to Scotland, I saw a Single Barrel offering at a pub, and I decided to try it. Always up for something new, keeping the mind open, etc... And boy am I ever glad I did! It was truly delicious, one of the best bourbons I've ever tasted. I went back the next night for more. (I think I ended up drinking more American whiskey than single malts on that trip).

What I'd like to find out is this: Is there any way to tell which recipe it is from the barrel number on the bottle? The barrel number on the bottle was 5-18-ODE, dated 4-9-08 (I assume that's a bottling date).

I'll be traveling to the US in March, and if I can find a single barrel of the same recipe, I'd like to try it. I know full well that being a single barrel offering, it will be subject to some variation, but I'd very much like to taste that recipe again.

Here's what it looked like:

All 4R single barrel is OBSV, possibly the same recipe as Bulleit. That said, there is a lot of variation between bottles and barrels so there's no telling if it will have the exact same flavor it had in Scotland. But that's the fun of it!

BTW, if you're coming thru Detroit and have time, lemme know and we'll get a drink or three.

Cool bottle. Always lived getting 4r's on my European business trips 10. Years ago. Where are you going in US? Surely someone on here can make sure you get to the right spot to get what you need.

5-18-ODE sounds like barrel 5-18 racked O deep in warehouse D's East door.

Most of the warehouses have N/S doors, there's only a few with E/W doors, 3 or 4 I think.

I've not seen a DE around here, but there are only a few stores that carry the 4R1B.

I see you're going to Boca Raton, can't help you with stores, but just start phoning them off the internet to find one with the selection you want.

This is true only of the "standard" FRSB. The limited edition SBs have been from other recipes.

Also, single barrels of the other FR recipes have been done for a number of high-volume liquor stores as well as for individuals / groups doing barrel purchases.

Interesting that it's 86 proof, when the US edition of the standard single barrel is 100 proof.

I'd assume that it's the standard OBSV recipe, but if you were to inquire with 4 Roses, they would probably tell you for sure based on the barrel number. They have a pretty good reputation of accommodating these sorts of requests, I believe.

The original US single barrel release back in the late 90s was also 86 proof.

I imagine that the export Four Roses single barrels were kept at 86 proof to be in line with European market tastes.
