Willett Family Estate Bourbon

Does anyone know what the source bourbon is for the current release of Willett Family Estate bourbon? I purchased the 7yr. It seems to have been picked by Specs and is bottle 12 of 156. Was it sourced from Heaven Hill or Bernheim? For that matter is it wheat or rye based?

Also, I sat the bottle next to my WLW and the bottle shape is identical. Did KBD source the same bottles as BTAC?

On the bottle shape, their younger ryes (single barrels from LDI) use the same bottles: identical to BTAC (and too tall to fit in my main cabinet :hot:).

What does the 7 y/o taste like?

In short, members didn't like the 7 yr and enjoyed the 8 yr but thought it was overpriced.

I actually haven't cracked it open yet. I was saving that moment for my next tasting event. I want to do a Bourbon Barrel Strength tasting. I picked the 7yr because it was the oldest they have and its unfiltered as well as barrel strength.

I want 6 in the line up. Right now the Willett makes 5. Here's the line up thus far:

GTS

WLW

PHC 1st ed

4R1B LE

And Willett 7yr

I have KCSB but, i consider it an over-proof bourbon because as a single barrel product it cant possible come out to 120 proof each and every time. So they are altering the proof for consistency. Same is true for OWA.

Any thoughts as to what the 6th should be? I thought of Booker's,but I am not sold on it yet.

Well...maybe that barrel selection was bad and I'll get lucky ;). It would be nice to know what barrel number it was. Also, with bourbon, one man's bad is another man's good. I would like to know what flavor profile was off-putting. It seems odd that they (Specs) can pick a good 2, 4, and 6 yr but mess up on the 7.

Of course I could just be arguing the point because I am in denial that I bought an expensive bad bourbon :lol:

Not the truth for KCSB...it can have a proof greater then 120 it just can't be lower...I have a number of Binny's bottles where they call out the exact proof and they're all in the 130-140 range.

How about WTRB for your sixth bottle?

I have that on my radar. I saw the previous thread about the discussion of it's near constant proof. I think it was left off as the .X after the proof changes.

Are you sure that just isn't the case for "hand picked" barrels by people/companies? All the KCSB in Dallas I have seen are printed 120 proof with no difference between bottles. So it seems if I want to include KCSB, I need to find a bottle that has been selected by a 3rd party.

I cracked it opened and tasted it. It's a rye for sure. Heavy oak and it tasted almost exactly like Wild Turkey 101. Not the best for the price. :(

I actually wonder if they did source it from Wild Turkey? Does WT sell their barrels to independent bottlers?

I think the high proof on that Willett has burnt something out. I don't quite understand that quote.

It means they all deny selling bulk whiskey but in fact they all do it. Looking at my my post I guess I had an extra THEN in there that didn't belong.

I think I am going to give the Willett 7yr a bit more credit. I tasted it again today. The nose is much creamier than yesterday. If you add a splash of water the caramel and vanilla are very rich. The wood note takes a step back and doesn't come around until the finish. Water does weird stuff with whiskey. Now, when i added the water I covered it and let it sit about 15 minutes.
