spinningrecords
I found a cache of these for $110. Does anyone have an opinion of this lable?

ethangsmith
Sounds like you're looking at a bottle of the Hirsch rye. I have a bottle of it and it too says it was distilled in '83. I bought it because it's the year I was born. Don't know what it tastes like, but I've heard it's really good- and for $110 each, that's a really good price! Jonny.Applebury
I've finished two bottles of the Hirsch 22 year old rye distilled in 1983. It's rather good, if you like potent rye whiskey. It shows up in my neck of the woods periodically, too. This is good, because I always find myself wanting another bottle when I finish one.

White Dog
$110 is a great price for Hirsch 22yr Rye. I've gone thru 4 bottles, and have loved every one!

cowdery
BTW, this product has nothing to do with the legendary A. H. Hirsch bourbon except both were sold by Preiss Imports (now Anchor). If that's what you're looking for, the key is the "A. H." Only the bourbon has the "A. H." before "Hirsch." There have been several different products bottled as Hirsch, without the A. H., such as this rye. This rye, if I remember correctly, is from that same Bernheim "Cream of Kentucky" batch that has shown up as VWFRR, Michter's, and other KBD bottlings. Julian took what he wanted and sold the rest to KBD. I haven't had it -- at least not the Hirsch iteration of it -- but I've heard it's very good. Worth $110 a bottle? That's the question. I don't have an answer but if someone wants to send me a bottle, I'm willing to venture an opinion.
dohidied
So I have access to this and Vintage 23 for around $115. There seems to be a lot more praise for this bottling. Any comparisons?
cowdery
It's the same whiskey from a different barrel a year later, so how different can it be?

White Dog
Differences due to barrel selection? I've had the Vintage 23 and, while I am on record with saying Vintage 21 is one of my favorite whiskeys, I didn't like the 23 at all.
cowdery
I didn't say no difference, i said not a lot of difference.

spinningrecords
Wow, was I wrong. $170 at the store I found it. Let's see, this or Vintage 21 at $150? My 30th is coming up next year and it would be cool to pop a fine rye from my year of birth.I just rounded up a bunch of Vintage 23 for closer to $100.I posted the haul in the what did you buy today thread so I won't repeat it here. I've got some more stragglers from Hirsch and Rittenhouse on the way. The only other label I've seen around is the Michter's 10-year rye. I could conceivably round that up in quantity too but I haven't formed an opinion yet on it as I haven't tasted it.
Tico
I've got a lone bottle and have wanted to try it for some time. Another 1983'er here, mainly the reason I bought it.

If you look around you can find some still that even with shipping would be cheaper.
