unclebunk
Well I missed my order today due to work but anticipate a wealth of liquor tomorrow. It sounds like I picked out the right ones, those being the El Grado (2), Reserva de Mexico reposado, and the Kahlo blanco (would have gotten the añejo, but I was too slow). Also got Matusalem Gran Reserva, Barbancourt 5 Star, Clement VSOP, Dickel, and a handle of El Ultimo.Fortaleza really is excellent, from the perspective of a novice. It's almost too bad I happened to get a Lot 16, since my experiences likely won't get better than this. Almost.Glad you liked the Fortaleza. It really is superb. I managed to miss out on the Kahlo anejo too but scored the blanco and reposado, the latter of which was not showing as available online but apparently was still floating around in the back room when I happened to call to add additional items to my order. I also picked up two bottles of the El Grado, two bottles of Muchote reposado and a Fortaleza reposado which I haven't tried yet. Now all I need is an extra liver and I'm all set!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
Max Power
I get to pick up my shipment today as well. Really looking forward to trying the El Grado. I'm glad that a few of you were able to jump on this before they all sold out.

tanstaafl2
Picked up a Fortaleza anejo today. Didn't see the blanco as an option and the reposado was out of stock. Passed on an El Tesoro anejo (NOM 1139, was the only one on the shelf. Same place that makes Excellia which I like and El Tesoro used to have a decent reputation, not sure now). Max Power
Went back and picked up the El Tesoro anejo today on a bit of a whim. Is the lot number for the Fortaleza you note this hand written number on the back? Does that make this a lot 17?Yes, that is lot 17. However, the lots of each expression are independent of each other. Lot 16 blanco was not aged to make Lot 16 repo or añejo. I've heard good things about lot 17 añejo. Lots 15-16 añejo (from what I was told from someone inside Fortaleza) were not aged as long as previous batches because of demand...and some said were not as good. Fortaleza is a true artisenal brand so every lot will vary. Salud!

Clavius
I tried searching the thread but nothing came up. Has anyone here tried the Trader Joe's "Distinqt" reposado tequila?

Has anyone here tried the Trader Joe's "Distinqt" reposado tequila?http://www.tequila.net/tequila-reviews/blancos/trader-joses-tequila-silver.htmlMade at NOM 1558, which makes Luna Nueva, which is a solid brand. Trader Joe's can't carry liquor up here in MN, so I've never had it. I've heard that it's worth the price, but isn't spectacular.
Gillman
Reserva de la Familia Jose Cuervo, 2010 bottling (marked 22-IX-10)Colour: Medium AmberNose: Oak, spices, pepper, caramel tonesTaste: Sweet and rounded with good black pepper and the typical herbal notes of tequila, also a touch of the cork I think (in a good way). Early on the original cork crumbled and I found a WR cork that fit the bottle exactly but I think some of the smell got in, but that's okay. Well put together, it reminds me of a more conventional tequila, a good Cognac and good bourbon at the same time.Finish: Did I say pepper? Tingly too, caramel tones lingering.Good good good. A sister drink up next.Gary
Gillman
Tlacuache Silver Mescal (bottled 2008).Colour: White.Nose: Herbs, ethanol, smokeTaste: Rounded again and sweet in an (evidently) natural way. A waft of fresh smoke rises on the palate. Also notes of anise and white dog sort of.Finish: It's all about the smoke with good alcohol and pepper/herbs in support. Reminds me of a very good vodka too, not the big taste but the mouthfeel to the white spirit.I really like this one, it shows great individuality: I know of now other drink category quite like it. Tequila is perhaps more a cousin rather than a sister drink, they seem rather different at least based on these two samples.Gary Edited September 16, 2013 by Gillman
tanstaafl2
Saw an El Tesoro Paradiso extra anejo while wandering around Denver and decided to pick it up since it wasn't something I haven't seen at home. Hopefully I can get it home intact!
Alphanumeric
After getting distracted by the Clement and Matusalem (which are both excellent), I finally got around to cracking one of those tequilas. El Ultimo family size. First off, kudos to them for having the largest cork, stopper, and mouth of any bottle I've ever seen. You could lose a shot glass into it. My immediate responses to tasting it were, a) it blows Camarena (my previous mixer) out of the water. I don't want to embarrass Cuervo silver with a comparison. And it's extraordinarily sippable. Fortaleza and Cuervo Platino seem like two opposite styles of tequila, and El Ultimo rests between them, leaning toward Cuervo. While I might prefer the Fortaleza end, El Ultimo's middle ground is perfect for mixed drinks. That makes three for three of the bottles I've opened so far. Have you guys (Max and unclebunk) opened any of the sale ones yet?

Have you guys (Max and unclebunk) opened any of the sale ones yet? I have opened a few of them. For $10.99, I wish I would have bought 12 El Grado. It's wonderful. I've opened a couple of the Frida Kahlos, a couple of the 1519s as well. I've had all of the Reserva de Mexicos before. Fortaleza and Cuervo are a bit opposite as far as blancos go. However, the lot of Fortaleza can play a big factor in that. Some have a lot more earthy taste than others. Anyway, 1519 was fine for $15, but I can see why they didn't sell a lot in the $35-40 range, which is closer to their MSRP. Frida Kahlo is very nice and wasn't a bad buy at the previous price, but the añejo was probably too much in the $60-70 range. Pretty solid buy in the $40-50 and a must in the $20s. sutton
Finally opened the Don Julio Reposado gifted to me by a colleague in Guadalajara - 38% alc by vol. I do not drink tequila often and haven't had it neat (if you can call it that) since shooters in college almost 30 years ago. This is fabulous stuff - vanilla, honey agave, a bit of pepper on the finish, nice mouthfeel. It has made me want to explore a few other reposados and anejos, but this one will be the benchmark. If this is the only brand I have on the shelf, that is fine with me.

That said, I very much enjoy Don Julio and the repo is probably my favorite of the standard line, but there's an array of flavors out there. The one piece of advice that I'll give you is that you don't really have to break the bank to get some seriously good stuff. Enjoy the new found hobby & hunt. There is a good tequila bar nearby that has a decent selection, so I think I'll start there to try a few. My only other bottle is a Patron Reposado that I bought in the late 90's and only have used for marqueritas. After trying the DJ, I poured a sample of the Patron and was shocked at how different they were - the Patron was flatter and had a somewhat bitter, unpleasant finish. That scared me into proceeding a little more slowly until I get a few under my belt.
