Yeah espolon is every where but I guess I didn't recognize it because it was in a bottle and label design I hadn't seen before. Yes, Canicas. $99 for the reposado. Los azulejos had the simpler bottles, not overly painted or fancy.

The Herencia historico was in a nice wood box and came with a stemmed glass. This I think is the first release, supposed to be 5 years old. I heard the second @10yrs (and 3rd @12) releases came in even nicer boxes with 2 glasses.

Unfortunately they were all up very high behind the counter almost too far to reach in a ladder so I couldn't inspect more.

Canicas is meh for the price. HH 12 year is the oldest tequila out there. I've never had it, but I've heard it tastes like tree bark. If you like a woody drink, it's probably up your alley, but you can probably get that for a lot less.

Yeah I imagine it wood be. I'm going to go back soon and take a look at some stuff and if it's the 5yr old release I might try to negotiate for it.

Cava de Oro Anejo from a sample - I've been wanting to try this for some time... It's actually very sweet - in an artificial sweetener kind of way. Not peppery nor with much in the way of agave flavor though. I'll have to revisit this one with a fresh palate.

Cava de Oro is known for being on the sweet side. The XA won SoM a couple of years ago. That was when there was 130 entries and the judges had 3 days to do it, so the judging methodology might be flawed.

In keeping with the dead distillery theme, I'm having some Corrido Reposado tonight (thx Max Power):

I love that stuff. It's got a great buttery sort of flavor that I don't think has been duplicated by any other tequila that I've tasted....and we know that's a lot of them. :( or :D

I just dove into some Cava de Oro XA for the first time. Holy SUGAR BALLS Batman! The review will post on Dec #2, but this makes Clase Azul seem tame and earthy.

I was afraid of that after trying the Anejo.

I wish that I had tasted them before sending them to you. I would have tried to convince you to change your mind. I have no idea how it won Best in Show at SOM 2012.

We switched to Palomas tonight after trying/reviewing that. I'm one paloma away from Mrs. Power finding me attractive...

Hope you get lucky bud. It might be easier if your nipples freely dispensed tequila or whisky - just sayin'...

nice.

maybe first (and last?) time nipple will be used to search this sight

not sure I mentioned I cracked a bottle of Magave anejo the other day. got it for a good price and really enjoyed the pour. I'll have to revisit for any notes though.

That would make life easier for all of us.

Starting the night off w/ Alderete Anejo. Not much pepper or bite and finishes smoothly - I get some molasses/browned sugar on the palate with some faint agave on the palate. While not bad, it's not really wowing me either.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a successful dusty hunt and came across these on the road (my wife pulled them out of a box, actually). I'm not well versed in the tequila world but I've learned a little (from a forum member) and know Robert Denton imports are pretty good. The green label Chinaco Blanco I have open is fantastic.

Nice find. I'm going to be dipping into the agave distillate tonight. After my weekend it will be like saying hello to an old friend. I know that I'm writing a review on Pura Vida Extra Añejo, but beyond that I'm not sure.

Cool bottles DL.

I just got a bottle of the Pura Vida XA myself. Found it for a decent price so I jumped on it. Haven't spent any time with it yet. Look forward to your thoughts!

Hey Max, what's the deal on El Tequileno Reposado again? Decent stuff? The price sure can't be beaten but I'm wondering how it stacks up against Muchote.

Love them both for the price. Muchote has a bit more "green"agave notes, but they both rank in my top 5 tequilas at $25 or under. I have multiples of each. With something like El Tequileño out there at $15.99, anyone who buys a mixto for the same price deserves to be punched in the face. It works well for sipping and mixing...and makes a killer paloma.
Thanks for the quick feedback. But now that you've mentioned that they are two of your top 5 in the under $25 bracket, I have to ask what the other three are. Do tell?

If Hi Time still had El Grado, I'd recommend that. It's only $10.99 and made at the same distillery (and a similar profile to) as Corrido was. Olvido from NOM 1079 was only $12 and has the great profile that 1079 juices have for a fraction of the price. Same can be said for Herencia Mexicana from the same distillery. Then I would probably go with Reserva de Mexico. It's a bit more mild on the spice, but full flavored and tasty. And if you can find it, I would recommend Viva Mexico over anything except Muchote (they're both NOM 1414, so the repos are similar). All of these brands are stellar for the price.
