A friend of mine spotted some Michter's 10 year rye at a reasonable price. One has a barrel number on it and the other doesn't.

I recall hearing something about how maybe they changed the juice that they put in during a later bottling. But I had always assumed it was all from Bernheim rye stocks.

Does anyone know if that's true and there's a specific set of barrels I should look for with the "good stuff"?

At the Binny's event in Chicago last month I asked one of the guys at the Michter's table if any of what they're bottling is still from the old Pennsylvania distillery. His answer was no. I can't attribute that information to a name because I lost all of the business cards on the subway ride back to my hotel that night. I doubt this is news to anyone here, though.

I've enjoyed the older stuff, though it goes flat in the bottle purty quick (as do a lot of older ryes IMHO). The newer stuff, while not terrible, is substantially different, and probably (to my palate) closer to the 10 y/o age statement than the older stuff, which tasted much older than that (and had been speculated here to be closer to 18 years). I won't be buying another bottle of the new stuff and I find it close to offensive that it's being sold at the $100+ pricepoint; even at $60 I'd find it overpriced.

This weekend bought a bottle of Michter's 10yr rye for the first time in about 3 years.

Is there any way to tell the difference between the new and old bottles? I have about 1/5 of my older bottle left and was going to wait until it was done to open the new bottle. I'd rather keep the new one sealed but it's tempting to compare the two.
