Any Info? - Alchemist Heaven Hill 12yr 1999

Haven't heard of this one before...so it in a new catalog at work. Did a quick google search and it didn't really turn up much of anything.

I'm sure what little I've dug up you've already found yourself. I'm curious now, though. The tweet directed at Jason Pyle says that it's an 86 proof blend of bourbon, rum, armagnac, etc., but an online retailer lists it as 63% and if it is in fact a blend of different spirits that doesn't fit with the specific, bourbon-oriented, name (Alchemist Heaven Hill 12yr) or what the company has done in the past

According to the catalog, it's listed at 92 proof. I sent a message to the distributor to ask for more info. Could be pretty cool.

From the Scotch side of things, everything I've had from Alchemist is amazing.

The Springbank (port finished) is among my top 10 all time favorite pours. While not a Macallan fan in general, I really loved what they did with that one - and the HP was amazing too.

I have not tried the Calvados or Armagnacs.

I'd bet their HH would be pretty tasty - Gordon Wright has excellent taste.

Up until fairly recently (6-8) years ago Heaven Hill put out a 12 year old 86 proof Bourbon under the 1889 Royal label. Should be some dusties out there.

Is the 1889 Royal any good?

Yes, it is/was good. The Heaven Hill standard bearer at the time was the 7 year 90 proof Evan Williams black label and we considered the 1783 (10 year) and 1889 Royal (12 year), both 86 proof, to be their way of supplying an older expression while keeping the retail cost down by lowering the proof.

Good examples of what another poster described as "WW2 Veteran's Whisky", my late Father's generation, many of whom equated older with better.

My bottle was purchased a few months ago in Oakland Ca. It has the Heaven Hill label as you can see. I shall open it soon.

There are a couple of different labels, apparently they were forced to remove the "Heaven Hill" that appears in dementedavenger's post. The photo in SKU's blog doesn't seem to have HH ion it.

I was told that in the U.S. it was distributed by CVI (Black Maple Hill) and they used the Heaven Hill name without permission, thus their product was pulled. I received the bottles as a gift and they were purchased in the U.K. There's no back label on mine, just a small tax-related sticker indicating that it's for purchase in the U.K. only.

I had a pour last night. It's a smooth bourbon, definitely on the sweet-end (low-rye mash bill, I assume). I don't get much of an aged taste to it. There's sort of a glisten at the end that is nice. I call it "quaint and cute". I'm going to give it a little time before I dip into it again to see if there's any change. I can't really compare to other HH offerings because I don't own or drink much of their product outside of PHC.

EC12 is worth its price even without the Alchemist bottle to compare with it.

Wish I could find a bottle of the 12 year 1889 Royal to compare to EC 12. Expect EC would come out on top but the comparison would be interesting.

That bottle actually does say Heaven Hill on it (on both front and back label), just like the other one pictured, it just didn't come out well in the photo.

I like EC 12 (alot actually) but never think to buy it. Got everything going for it, age, proof, provenance, the complete package. Guess I'm just in no hurry because I figure it will always be around.

If the Shapira family ever sells Heaven Hill though, I will be stocking up.
