Moving advice

We are moving from Cincinnati to the Denver area in about two months. Is there any concern for letting the moving company take our bunker and take it on what may be a two week journey through steamy memphis and houston before it gets to Colorado? Will exposure to heat and humidty affect it? I'm willing to uhaul it myself like moderator Virus of Life did for his bunker from SoCal to Oregon.

Mark, sounds like you need a Cincinnati caretaker of your bunker. . The heat and humidity should not have any impact for that short time frame. I have never used a shipping company but would think they should be able to insure it.

I wouldn't worry about the temps/weather. OTOH, most if not all shipping companies will not transport alcohol. We did a cross country move and the company even made us get rid of flammable cleaning supplies. You could always hide it in boxes but I would be afraid of breakage.

There have been stories here of members having corks pop and bottles crack when stored in a hot car trunk for a relatively short period of time, so I don't think your concerns are misplaced.

Best bet would be a private vehicle or a rental van. I wouldn't trust my bunker to a moving company regardless of the season.

A moving company had said they can and do move personal collections, but I need to meet with them next week regarding what, it any, extra precautions they take to ensure safe delivery. My wife, already rolling her eyes at the size of the stash, is incredulous that I'd even consider flying back to Ohio one way and uhauling it to CO. What means more to me: a safe stash or a spouse that still has faith in my judgement?!

I would go with safe stash but thats just me. I dont have a big bunker but what i have i wouldnt allow anyone to move but me.

May I suggest another way to frame this proposition: hopefully, she drinks champagne. If so, what's her favorite. Buy her a case of it, then your problem is her problem also.

Easy safe stash. Her faith in my judgement was already lost in building the stash in the first place, among other things.

If I had to move my stash, I'd probably pack it up myself and ship it...at least with the most expensive stuff. The rest I'd give away and/or have a party.

Big day tomorrow SBNation. Moving van arrives after 6 day jaunt from Cincy to Colorado. We removed a couple boxes worth of best stuff and family vanned it. Rest (about 200) went on the pretty green Mayflower truck. (remember the colts leaving Baltimore?)

Taking bets on how many bottles were harmed. Vegas notes over under at 15.

Will report back--seeing how the bunker survived MUCH more important than actually setting up the house.

I'm pretty new to this whole bunkering thing, but what does one do with 200 bottles? Are these sitting on the shelf for looks, are they to drink in comparison, etc...?

Good luck on the move. Sad to see a Cincy member moving away but good luck in Colorado. If I can ever talk my wife into it I will make that same move one day.

I will take the under. I bet 2 max don't make it and wouldn't be surprised if they all make it in one piece.

Fearing that this day might come (I've been laid off twice now from the media industry), we started buying up some labels that aren't as generally available as there are in Kentucky. A lot of Very old Barton, the Heaven Hill BIBs, the Weller line, and some other spirits like tequila and rum. stuff we will drink though admittedly it should last until I die. There ate then also some collectibles -- just a few stagg, pappy, etc that come in the family van

My moving company wouldn't take my collection. There are just so many weird state laws regarding larger amounts of alcohol (about 1/2 the states won't legally let you even bring in your collection from another state - Texas among them).

I packed it all and put it in my UHaul we took a bunch of other stuff down with us. I didn't lose a single bottle and had no issues with the transit.

I doubt, if you packed it even reasonably well, you will have a single issue with the move. Things only go bad when UPS/FedEx guys are tossing around the boxes like they do - and even then when packed well things go OK usually.

Good luck with the move. It's a little late now, but I'd suggest looking at amazon for some wine bottle shipping containers that people use when bring wine back on vacation.

I've used these a couple of times when I'm traveling cross country and they work well. Of course I haven't carried anywhere near the full collection.

95% unloaded (and man do we have a lot of crap!) and no wet spots on any boxes. No guarantee there's still not a crack or broken seal here or there, but the worst seems behind us.

Just another example of luck over skill, naive over experience.

Glad all went well or at least as far as you can tell. Be glad it was not wine... we moved close to 3000 bottles from Denver to DC in July (1987).... the only way was a refrigerated moving van.... luckily it was back in the days when corporate moves covered everything!!
