Knob Creek

A friend of mine gave me a bottle of Knob Creek Friday. You know the saying free liquor is the best kind. Well, not so much on my part.

I am not an expert but I couldn't get past the grassy/hay taste that I was getting. Is it me or does anyone else get this? Maybe the bottle needs some air.........I only had one and put the cork back in the bottle and put her on the shelf. I will revisit it in a few weeks.

On the other hand I picked up a bottle of EC12 on Friday after some recommendations on another thread. Did some damage to that bottle this weekend.

I have never gotten a bottle of Knob Creek that had a grassy or hay taste and, to the best of my recollection, I have never read it from anyone else. The worst complaint is usually the "funky yeast taste" ( from people that will say the same thing about all Beam products), or that it is "boring", "not complex, " or "there are better things out there for the price. " but "grassy" is not a typical complaint.

Yeah I never got that, although I am not a fan of KC..I like Baker's and JBB though and like JBW on the rocks.

I have found that if you break the seal on a bottle and give yourself a pour right away, that first pour tastes nothing like the rest of the bottle. I find that when the whiskey is sealed in the bottle it goes into a state of hibernation and needs time to wake up before you get the real taste. Sometimes you see amateur reviewers crack open a bottle and review it on the spot. I don't know how they get away with that? I don't know how the pro's do it either if they are only getting a small sample. If you want to get to know a whiskey you have to have patients and drink the whole (or most) of the bottle (not at once). It takes patients and practice. :cool:

Maybe Beam products just aren't your thing. The only stuff they make that I really like are Old Grandad Bond, or 114. HH, and BT, on the other hand, I like just about everything except the 80 proof bottom shelf stuff.

I keep extra bottles to use for all of my Weller bourbons. I will pour half into the empty bottle.

I wasn't trying to review Knob Creek, I was just asking if anyone has had the same experience.

Sorry, if i offended anyone.

I put it back in the cabinet hoping that in a week or two I would have some more time to spend with it. Hopefully this weekend :grin:

I don't rhink you offended anyone. (certainly not me). It just seemed a bit odd to hear it called grassy. There are certainly Buffalo Trace products that get noted for that, just like Heaven Hill seema to be lnown to have a "toothpaste minty" quality and Beam like I said earlier is odten associated with "yeasty funk. " thus is seemed noteworthy that this was a seemilgly atypical experience (as far as I have seen). I will be curious to aee what happens when you revisit it.
