Great Liquor Stores in Kansas City?

Heading down to KC in a month. I am really big into bourbon, scotch, and beer. I'd like to know of 1-3 really amazing liquor stores in the KC area - either Missouri or Kansas side. There really isnt anything in particular I am looking for in the whiskey area but I am interested in trying to find some of the rarer beers like from Dogfish Head and The Brewerie if possible.

Please provide advice if you'd be so kind.

Definitely check out the various Gomer's and Lukas stores in the area. For beer, stop into Flying Saucer Draught Emporium. Red X out in Riverside is a quirky store...Wal-Mart meets local hardware store meets deli meets liquor store. You can find some interesting things there.

Berbiglia is a local chain that still has their own house brand of well-quality spirits, which I think is pretty neat. It makes me think of the old wheeling and dealing days of Max Shapira of Heaven Hill that the Reagan's memorably wrote about.

It also used to be my David Nicholson 1843 connection. It'd be interesting if Luxco still states it was distilled at DSP KY 16, as it did for at least a decade after it no longer made sense.

I saw multiple bottles with these false labels adorning the shelves of St. Louis liquor stores only a few months ago.

Yep saw them last year at Liquor World in Bardstown and the Foremost on Argyle in Chicago. Wonder how many have been resold on the internet as supposed S-W.

This sounds interesting but I'm not at all familiar with the spirit you are referring to. Can you give me a brief history of what you're discussing or direct me to where I can learn more. It sounds like one of the bottles is pretty rare and something I should buy if I see it but at the same time that there are some knockoffs that are decidedly not desirable.

I'm really looking forward to my trip. I hope to find some Dogfishhead beer there too - just brought home a four pack of Midas Touch from Colorado back to Nebraska (maybe the worst state in the union for amazing and rare booze) and was reminded how good life can be.

Enjoy KC! The 1843 is a local brand in the MO area, 100 proof and was a good buy for many, many years. A quick search turned this up:

And from personal experience, it's a pretty good 'local' bourbon, was quite good in the days when it was still S.W. juice. But then, what wasn't?
