Just got the attached via e-mail this afternoon (way to plan ahead, guys). In a nutshell Blue Plate Restaurants, a local outfit that comprises several restaurants around town, has done a barrel selection of Four Roses and is unveiling it tonight (June 4th) and tomorrow (June 5th) at four of their restaurants.

No idea what recipe it is or what proof. Supposedly Jim Rutledge will be there, so it would be cool to meet him.

The only one of these restaurants I've been to is 3 Squares, which is near my home. The food is decent enough.

Because of commitments the only event I can attend is the 3 Squares one tonight, and that even may be pushing it. If I am there, I am the dude with long wavy brown hair and glasses. Say if you see me (I don't know the SB secret handshake.)

Well, the event was okay, if a little cramped. Most of the people in the barwere there for the Monday night comedy, but a handful of us were ther to talk to Jim.

No bombshells were dropped, sorry. I did ask if Kirin is ready to let him do a rye, and he laughed and said, "workin' on it."

Oh, and somebody asked him about group barrel purchases, and as he was talking through the process, he mentioned a certain apartment number group by name. Apparently they buy a lot of barrels.

As for the Blue Plate selection, it's standard OBSV, 100 proof, selected by a local committee. It' slightly bigger in moutffeel than the bottle I have open, and with a longer, more cinnamon-drenched finish. Very good, but I'm glad I got it for $5 a pour and not the $11 menu price.

Restaurants and single barrel whiskey certainly trending up. One recently opened here in the Chicago burbs Lincoln Whiskey Kitchen. They have their own barrel picks of EWSB and EC 12, apparently for sale by the bottle too. Their blog talks of meeting with Jim Rutledge last spring so that could be next...unless they have an exclusive with HH (inside Chicago joke about the way beer business is done here with bars having exclusives for either Bud or Miller distribution).
