4R Gift Shop Bottles

I have a couple of these but haven't gotten around to opening one yet.

I have the 54.7% ABV and the 61.1%.

I was not overly impressed with the Shoppers Vineyard selections that Mr Rutledge made.

They were good but a little on the hot side for 4R, an ice cube does help it.

So, if you have tried them what do you think about the 4R Gift Shop bottles?

They are both OBSV.

The 54.7% was bottled January 2012, Barrel No 78-3A from Warehouse QS.

The 61.1% was bottled February 2012, Barrel No 78-4A from Warehouse QS also.

No ages are given.

Everything I have from them is age stated, so I can't help you.

I looked again and in the fine print it is stated after all, both are 16 years old.

I haven't had the 16yo, just tasted a few barrels of the 17yo. I have shared my feelings on these expressions elsewhere, but in the interest of tempering a stampede, I'll just say that if you're a fan of 4R, you'll most likely find the extra-aged OBSVs pretty special.

I haven't had the 16yo, just tasted a few barrels of the 17yo. I have shared my feelings on these expressions elsewhere, but in the interest of tempering a stampede, I'll just say that if you're a fan of 4R, you'll most likely find the extra-aged OBSVs pretty special.

Though I have to say that just last night I had a pull from the 54.7%, 78-3A, 16 year old barrel bottling Oscar references above, for the first time since the Sampler weekend, and it wasn't doing it for me. Just tasted woody, muted and one dimensional. Still smelled exceptional. I never thought that before on this one though. And the bottle had no problem getting to its current less than quarter full status so maybe it's just the damn 100 degree heat, work stress or bottle air time . I brought this one to the Sampler and it got a good workout there too.

Though I have to say that just last night I had a pull from the 54.7%, 78-3A, 16 year old barrel bottling Oscar references above, for the first time since the Sampler weekend, and it wasn't doing it for me. My experiences with a 17 y/o gift shop OBSV echo Ryan's and Thad's. I should know better by now: older ryes and rye-based bourbons can peter out with too much air time. While I've had more than my share of revelatory experiences w/ air time, I've definitely found that "saving" a great bottle can precipitate its downfall.

Oh, and as Thad says, nose is still phenomenal. I know Aaron recently opened one of these so I guess I'm going to have to help him kill it before it goes south.

No help needed. Poor thing lasted only two weeks. Second FR GS bottle that once opened never had a chance, and the only dear, dear bottle that I have allowed myself to go through so quickly! (Oh, except for that VWFRR that I AWF'd...)

After the glowing reviews, I may have awf'd myself. The gift shop bottle I picked up last December is now the bottle for my little 15 month old. It will be quite dusty by her 21'st birthday.

From what was said they expect to have them for sale again within the month.
