butterscotch note in bourbon = Alzheimer's?

Diacetyl is a natural by product of fermentation. It also known to have a butter or butterscotch taste note. I love bourbons that have this note - think ND OGD. Scientists now suspect a link between diacetyl and Alzheimer's.

I'm not for sure the butterscotch note I get on some bourbons is from diacetyl and I'm not really worried, but thought this was interesting.

if it came from fermentation you would taste it in the whitedog. Last I checked, its not in the whitedog.

Are they saying that exposure to Diacetyl causes Alzheimer's or that sensitivity to Diacetyl is an early indicator of Alzheimer's? Big difference.

the authors are claiming a link of diacetyl exposure to neurotoxicity due to an increase in beta-amylase clumping. Beta-amylase clumps (plaques) have been identified as a factor in Alzheimer's disease development.

The risk is probably more for those exposed to diaceyl in the food processing industry (ie microwave popcorn or margarine manufactures) than the minute amounts we get drinking whiskey (and beer and wine)

Personally - I'm going to hang my hat on this comment regarding moderate alcohol consumption and Alzheimer's prevention

You cannot fart now and smell it without some genius saying you will get cancer. The folks who had problems with it are the people exposed to vast amounts of it working in popcorn factories turning out fake butter tasting popcorn. I say buy plain popcorn, pop it and pour real healthy natural butter, melted over the top of it. Pour a nice glass of bourbon, then get the cigarette rollers to quit messing with the tobacco in cigarettes so you can have a nice cancer free smoke after the bourbon and popcorn and the whole world would be a better place. Just my 2 cents.

Smelling farts causes nausea.

A recent study showed that in a test group of 68 people, those over age 57 who experienced nausea at least 3 times per week had a 38% increase in risk of brain cancer.

It's so scientific!!!

On a serious note... I was gonna ask which bourbons have the 'biggest' butterscotch taste. Now I'm scared, lol.

Secondhand fart gas is a leading cause of hilarity, you know. To put a stop to this health menace, bills are being written to ban farting in restaurants and bars. The pinto bean lobby has major juice (so to speak) in DC, though, so the bills aren't expected to get passed (so to speak!).
