So many things wrong with this. All the prices are ridiculous, but why is the Stagg the cheapest of the BTAC? And, the insane prices on the VW and BTAC is bad enough, but look at those prices on the ER10, Ritt, and BT.

Wow. I thought we had it bad in Canada. Those prices would make me quit drinking.

Maybe everyone in Australia is making a six figure salary.

This store wasn't the only place with these high prices. Gregg sent me numerous photos like these. Of course, he always grabs stuff here in the states before he returns home (to Perth).

This store is charging a bit more than we normally pay for these products, but it's not to far above the norm.... Typically Buffalo Trace (700ml @ 80 proof in Aust.) is $49 and Eagle Rare is $60.

To give some perspective on our retail costs, Jim Beam White (700ml @ 74 proof) is $30, Jack Daniels Old No 7 is $30, Makers Mark (700ml @ 80 proof) is $40 and Wild Turkey 86.8 700ml is $38.

Cam, I am curious as to the reason for the high prices in your area. Obviously there are transport costs, but this would not fully explain it. Does Australia levy huge import tariffs against alcohol? Is is due to high taxation? Do you get gouged on most imported spirits? I am guessing that perhaps prices made a bit more sense before the Australian dollar strengthened against the USD.

I'm going to try and answer this one. Let's see if you guys down in Oz agree with me.

I believe the high cost of spirits in Australia is due to the combination of taxes, duty/tariff, and shipping. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Spot on Joe. I read somewhere that a bottle of Jim Beam White costs about $15 landed here, and that the other $15 (of the $30 total) is tax :hot:

  • 4 weeks later...

Dont forget Australia has the highest wages, rental and goods prices in the world. Should compare the general wages of a liquor store attendant between USA and Australia would be just another factor into the prices here.

This thread also makes me realise why it's (almost) cheaper to take the family on a holiday to the US each year to buy higher end bourbons...... plus we get a nice holiday!!!

My buddy Gregg from Perth was here in Houston to see his parents last week. He took those pics I posted. He went home with a Stagg I recently purchased for $68.99. He's leaving the price tag on the bottle just to show his friends how rediculous those prices are.
