I just ordered the "set" of the 2012 BT experimental bourbons. They are 19 and 23 yr old Rye bourbon Mash #2 aged in 135 gallon barrels. Has anybody tried this yet? The larger barrels and age is what has me excited to try it.

I ordered it from Pennsylvania's wine and spirit online store... Which doesn't help you much as they only ship to PA addresses

GIANT BARRELS STILL PRODUCE LOUSY WHISKEY.

No, not really but it had to be said. This is actually a super enjoyable whiskey. Toasty nose w salted caramel. Really sweet and syrupy upfront. Juicy mid-palate. Nice finish of red hots and drying oak. Digging it a lot in all honesty.

They have the 19 and 23 at a new specialty shop nearby, for about $55 apiece. They won't open one for a sample, so I will have to pony up if I want to try it.

The large barrel thing has got me curious as well. If BT published the failure of the small barrel experiment, it seems like they consider this one a success. With the lower evaporation rate in the giant barrels, it seems like whiskey be aged longer, while gaining complexity, without becoming overly woody. As with any of the BTEC, the price is the limiting factor, but I might give in for one of these.

Sounds like the 19 is the one to try.

I just acquired the 19yo (passed on the 23yo which was also available). Haven't opened it yet but may try to get to it this weekend.

"The Experimental Collection will be packaged in 375ml bottles. Each label will include

all the pertinent information unique to that barrel of whiskey. These whiskeys will retail for

approximately $46.35 each."

YOWZA. I'd be tempted to contact them and see if that's right or not. They have the ex rice bourbon for $49 so maybe it's an error? If not they are off their nut asking that much.

Okay folks,

Just to clarify this is not the shelf price, but a place holder so we can actually get these products on the shelf for our customers before they're sniped online by someone who's never shopped with us. I would like to point out a couple of things about BTEC. I pay more than Buffalo Traces suggested retail price from the wholesaler. Perhaps as the product moves west the allocations get thinner and thinner and the price gets higher at the distribution level. In Kentucky, they always seem to be plenty of this stuff selling for at or around my cost. Also, this release, unlike the the Rice & Oats which we received 10 cases, was limited to 3 bottles. Regardless of the price this release looks like it will be back to the standard ultra difficult to acquire BTEC. Sorry for the confusion, I will adjust the price within a few hours.
