Curtisc84
Found some fun Dusty bottles today. Cyrus Noble bottled in San Jose Ca Old Forester dimpled 1lt bottle IW Harper Gold 1.75 86 proof I picked up a couple of each. I figured it be fun to do side by sides with the new Cyrus Noble and Old Forester. I couldn't find a bottling date of the I.W. Harper, any ideas? I searched the thread but only seen the 1.75 80proof. Cheers!

squire
Curtis it might also be fun to buy a bottle of Evan Williams Black and compare it to the Cyrus Noble.
Curtisc84
I'll definitely compare the two, thanks for the tip.
savagehenry
Anyone know how old that dimpled OF is? I have a store close to me that has two 1L bottles with a similar label that I'm thinking of picking up.

Unless the price is ridiculous, of course.

squire
I wouldn't say there's been any real change in Forester, per se, over the 40 or so years I've been drinking it, but if there's a choice I will always pick an older bottling (80s) because back then all the whisky went into the brand as opposed to now when the cream is being skimmed to create Woodford and Birthday. savagehenry
When did the white label completely disappear?
squire
Well it went from paper to plastic, hmm, six years or so back, but the current look is rather recent.
jfw
The OF of the 80s is much better than the current release. It's one of my favorite bourbons. The OFBB 2005 has a very similar profile to the 80s OF and is a personal favorite.
squire
Got to agree jf, I will reach over more than a few to get to the Birthday.

HighInTheMtns
Isn't Woodford now made in a different distillery from OF and OFBB?
T Comp
Here's a thread from '09 on Old Forester with pics and and all http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?11501-Dating-Old-Forester&highlight=forester+dimpled+bottle
squire
Yes, Woodford is made in a separate distillery from Old Forester (Early Times) but the owner (Brown Forman) mingles the two distillates together for the Woodford brand. At first Forester whisky was used to create a Woodford brand while the new made whisky from the renovated Labrot & Graham distillery was aging. The practice has continued at least partially to maintain the flavor profile created for Woodford. My point is select (read 'honey') barrels of Old Forester are still being used to beef up the Woodford line thus diminishing the supply of the best stuff available for the Forester brand. While this will not stop me from using Forester it will prevent me from paying a premium for a bottle of Woodford. Thought it was all from the Versailles distillery now. I appreciate the clarification.
