I bought a bottle of Makers mistake for $5 from K&L.

I approve. Make sure you keep it for the historical record.

Today I stocked up on some bottom shelf and picked up some candidates for an upcoming tasting I'm putting together.

Heaven Hill Gold 86 - never tried

pikesville rye

Evan Williams Single Barrel 2003 Barrel 59 bottled 9.8.03 bottled 12.20.12

Elijah Craig 12

Blantons - can't remember barrel info

I passed on the last bottle of EH Taylor they had in stock and Knob Creek Rye

Thanks to a fellow SB member (MyOldKyDram), I was able to pick up a FR 100th Anniversary and also found an ORVW 107 just sitting on the shelf in the same store. Also picked up a couple of WT 101 ryes as well. Thanks again Sean!

3X Booker's 10th Anniversary. Was pretty excited to come across this, the box had a stamp from late October 1998, and a price to match :)

Picked up a bottle of ETL after realizing every bottle on the bar was 100 proof +

Between last night and today, I've added two bottles of 84 proof MM, and two bottles of EW BIB to my cabinet. Two more wheaters, and two more BIB's. Don't git much bettern that. "KnoWhutimean Vern?" :D

Cheers!

Picked up some Bulleit 10yr on the cheap so I doubt I'll be too disappointed if it's not up to snuff!

I really like value BIB's (JTS Brown, VOB, etc.) and similarly priced 100/101 proofers (Fighting Cock, Old Forester Signature, OC101, etc.). They are ideal "session" whiskeys when hanging around watching sports with my friends and they don't hurt the wallet when the bottle is emptied. I just noticed that Binny's now has Old Heaven Hill BIB instead of just the lower proof Deluxe. It's dirt cheap at $12 but I'd rather spend an extra $8 and get another bottle of JTS Brown which I know I'll love if the OHH isn't all that good. Any thoughts on this one?

I liked it very much when it was Old Heaven Hill 10 year old BIB, don't know what the age statement is now.

I didn't look closely enough to catch the age on it and can't seem to find accurate info when I Google it (I've seen people refer to it as 5, 6 and 10 years old).

What color is the label? If it's gold it's 4 years old. I almost always have a bottle of this open (though I don't at the moment, ironically). It tastes like a 4 year old Heaven Hill bond (not helpful, I know, sorry:rolleyes:). Corny, not as much mint, lately, and relatively dry finish. One of the best values in bourbon, in my opinion, along with the 8 year old 86 proof that seems to be Minnesota only.

Ack, just remembered, the one I was referring to was Very Rare Old Heaven Hill, 10 years old, 100 proof. Buff colored label, I believe it was HH's highest end expression 20 years ago. I used to travel through Bardstown once a year and would pick up a case of this along with a few others.

Last time I was in Bardstown they still had the brand at Toddy's but the age statement was 8 years and the proof had dropped to 86. I believe the brand is now discontinued.

LB, did the bottle come with any information as to who make the whisky?

Good question, Squire. The short answer is that, no, it does not. The bottle simply says that it is "Bottled by Hirsch Distillers" in Bardstown, KY. This is quite obviously KBD sourced rye and we know how unforthcoming they are with information. That said, it is widely believed that the Hirsch 22 is Medley juice. While I would like to know for sure, and especially dislike the "Hirsch Distillers" bit, I have tasted all of the Hirsch rye bottlings and the 22 was a standout.

That VROHH 10 yr 100pr was a stunningly fantastic whiskey. If I remember correctly, it was like $13, or so. When the word hit SB that it was being discontinued ('06ish-'07ish, maybe?), it was right before KBF which I was going to, so I planned on picking up several cases. But, they were all gone by the time I got there.

Drowning my sorrows at the Gazebo Table later that night was a pick-me-upper, though. :bis:
