What bourbon did you purchase today? - Winter 2012/2013

Joe that brings up a good point. Sometimes I think our newer (younger?) members may think our veteran's musings over the dusty bottles may be a little misplaced. While it's true we have wider variety of quality Bourbons today it wasn't that long ago, before single barrels and small batches, that the major houses put their best barrels in their top end brands which were 8-10 years old and 100 proof. 8-10 BIBs were the standard for the best in show and there were some really good ones. Even the second lines were 7 yr/90 proof and well priced.

Many may disagree with me but I think Beam still does this, to the best of their ability-- Knob Creek at 9 and 100 pf, and Black Label at 8/86 (formerly 7/90). Whether they're well priced might be a separate conversation.

I think that in general there is a psychological tendency to overestimate how good things used to be compared to how they are now. On the other hand, I also think that my previous statement may just be a coping mechanism for how jealous I am that I was unable to partake in those old bourbons.

Thx Joe! The thought of being able to taste history in a bottle is a heady privilege. Honestly I never thought I'd score a dusty much less one like this bottle.

Raised number on the bottom of the bottle says 94.

Good question, Squire. The short answer is that, no, it does not. The bottle simply says that it is "Bottled by Hirsch Distillers" in Bardstown, KY. This is quite obviously KBD sourced rye and we know how unforthcoming they are with information. That said, it is widely believed that the Hirsch 22 is Medley juice. While I would like to know for sure, and especially dislike the "Hirsch Distillers" bit, I have tasted all of the Hirsch rye bottlings and the 22 was a standout.

Noticed Weller Special Reserve was $9, so figured why not. Actually the first time I've had it, started with the Weller 12 and didn't drop down, but enjoying a glass now and its mighty fine for the price.

$9?! That's a steal for the WSR. Ironically, WSR is sort of looked down upon a bit compared to its higher proof (OWA 107) and greater aged (Weller 12) brothers, but it's a 90 proof wheater, several years old--kind of like that other wheated bourbon with initials MM, just better (and cheaper)...

Picked up some Michters S B 10 y/o bourbon. They had a bottle of Michters 20 y/o uncut, unfiltered, but to much money for that bottle. Although I bet it's very good bourbon!!!

Picked up a Binny's BT to see how it is...$20 for a bottle isn't a huge risk and if I don't like it there are plenty of cocktails that call for BT!

Not Bourbon (nothing great on the shelves in Big D I don't already own) so filling in some missing Irish whiskey's and a couple of bottles of cherry juice for whisky sours.

Got an OWA, NAS sadly, but wanted to have all 3 Wellers on hand and opened at roughly the same time. Also picked up an Ancient Age 10 star, mistook it for 10 year, got excited. Either way I've never had it and working my way through sub $20 bottles is fun.

Also a Bulleit 10 year as a gift since it was the only thing in a box, and wanted to get the buddy something I knew would taste good and also look nice enough. Probably not worth it for the price, but at the very least it'll be a solid pour.

Found some semi-dusty bottles while traveling. The Classic Cask is a 22 year rye bottled in 2004 ($60). Never heard of it, but seemed like it was worth a shot. The WTKS is a dark smooth top bottled in September of 2003.
