It appears that Mclain& K... Whatever it is , has a redo or a second line in the Jefferson Reserve. I just saw it today. It is basically the same bottle and is finished with a wood stopper. It only says " Jefferson's" and says it is a small batch. About 28.95 at a place that doesn't come close to Liquor Barn prices , I might expect to see it for 22-25 there.Any one seeing this yet? toast.gif

It'll probably be a while before I see this here in NY (I'll probably just see it in Sept. in KY haha), but I'm going to be keeping an eye out now Bobby. Thanks for the heads up. Are you planning on buying it when you see it a little cheaper?

I almost did buy it but fought off the urge until I can get to Liquor Barn. They had 8 or so bottles so it probably won't dissapear soon. Jefferson's Reserve hasn't gotten good press here has it?

Yeah, I think the general concensus was it is good but a bit overpriced at $45-$50. I mean of course some don't like it, but generally I think it went over well. I enjoyed the bottle I had a few months back, but never bought another one since because of the price...

It comes down to that a lot, I feel that way about Basil Hayden's , I could drink it and enjoy it. But not at 32 dollars for 80 proof. Get it down to 18 and I might have a new friend! Don't waste any money on shipping this new Jefferson's, there will be plenty of it in Ky in September. toast.gif

Yep, I couldn't agree more, the price of some bottles kill the appeal in the grand scheme of things... Hey, at least now I have something else to look forward to picking up while in KY besides just the new B-Day Bourbon. lol.giftoast.gif

I got one, I guess part of the price reduction is there is no statement of age and 88 proof.

Hey, would ya look at that. It is like a 'cheaper' bottle of the reserve. It has the paper label down the side of the bottle like the reserve as well. I bet that wooden stopper reduces costs a bit instead of that hollow glass one on the reserve as well. I'm definately in for getting one during the festival this year. Let us know what you think whe you crazk that baby open! toast.gif

The lettering says;

Kentucky Straight

Bourbon Whiskey

Very Small Batch

Also on a neckband

Batch 1

Bottle 750

It has a nose that is reminiscent of Heaven Hill but that is all. It Tastes and has the mouth feel more of a 4 roses. Very smooth finish virtually no burn, As smooth as spring water on a hot summer day. I think if I had a bottle of Bulleit there may be some side by side comparisons. This is a good one , Your mileage may vary. toast.gif

Get ready, Bobby. I have both now with me here in L'ville. If our plans work out, we will hook up and do some comparisons. toast.gif

I looked for this today at the Liquor Barn at Beaumont Centre in Lexington and there was none to be found. I am quite intrigued as I do enjoy Jefferson's Reserve, but like most here find it too pricy. I wonder how old this one is?

Bobby,

Where did you find it and what did you end up paying for it?

I don't know the age. I like this one a lot, however it is the same more or less price as Van =Winkle 12 year Special reserve so your mileage may vary. It doesn't taste to me like anything I have tasted of Heaven Hill which is reportedly were he gets his whiskey. I found mine at Liqyor World on Eastern Parkway in Lou. for 27.99 . There are about 8 bottles at Turnpike Liquors in Shepherdsville for a dollar more.

Too bad we didn't hook up yesterday, Bobby, otherwise, I could have seen the fire, too. I needed to spend more time at the nursing facility getting my brother oriented with the place (he's sitting with Dad this week).

I am sipping some Jefferson's now. It doesn't impress me as much as it did the other day. Maybe my taste buds are off today.

Today, the nose is still nice and strong (for 88 proof). But, last time, the smooth taste has been replaced by a thin body and a somewhat hot finish.

At the $29 I paid for this, even when I had a good impression the other day, I don't think I would buy it again. However, at lower Liquor Barn prices, I might, if it were closer to $20.

BTW, the place where I paid $29 for Jefferson had ORVW 12 yo for $40, but Liquor Barn had the ORVW for $31. I am glad I waited.

I have only recently tried ORVW 12 yo, but it is fast becoming one of my favorites.

After my previous post about Jefferson, I decided to pour Bulleit. (I am at my parents' in WV; I left L'ville this morning.) I have only one snifter here in WV, so I can't compare side by side. I have to compare one after another.

The noses are similiar, but Bulleit is more full bodied, sweeter, and not nearly as hot. In this simple and unorthodox test, Bulleit wins easily.

When I get back home to NC later this week, I will see about putting these two side by side to do a more appropriate evaluation.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got a bottle last night and had a small sample. I tend to agree with other's findings here so far. Not bad overall, but a little hot on the nose and finish. I got it for $32 at Shoppers Village on Tates Creek. Haven't had any Jefferson's Reserve for a while, but if I recall correctly, this Jefferson's bares little resemblence to its older brother. Maybe a shootout is in order drink.gif Nice packaging though. I like the wooden stopper better than the glass one of JR.

Bobby / Jeff:

Is there any of this 88 proof Jefferson's in B-town, E-town or Frankfort? Sure hope Toddy's has some next month. I did like the original, hopefully they didn't mess up a good thing.

I like it a lot. It was at Kentucky Home Liquors in Btown last week. Toddy's didn't have it yet. Liquor Barn on Hurstbourne has it , Fern Valley does not. I have been told for a dollar or 2 more Van Winkle 12 beats it hands down. I don't know , I have a 12 but haven't got it open yet.

No doubt at all. ORVW 12 beats Jefferson black and blue. I think Jefferson's at $28 is overpriced by $8. I think ORVW 12 is a good value, even at $32.

I like my Jefferson's so far, but I won't pay $30 for it again. I think $20 would probably be a fair price. Nice assorment of flavors, but a little hard to get past the hot finish. Liquor Barn still doesn't have any. Try Shopper's Village if you want some in Lexington.

The Jeffeerson's appeared in Liquor Barn on Thursday of this week. Haven't had a chance to crack my new bottle. A little pricey at $30.
