Question from a Stagg 'virgin'

I'm curious as to what Stagg's nearest sibling would be. In many descriptions I've read of Booker's, for example, people have said it's essentially a barrel-proof Jim Beam Black.

If you add water to Stagg and make it 90 proof, what BT whiskey does it resemble? Blanton's? Rock Hill Farms? ETL? (Is there even an appropriate answer to this!?)

Somewhere in this forum the appropriate mashbill has been identified , I don't remember which it is. There isn't anything like Stagg, period. Booker's is on the same page however.

Why bother discovering this? Stagg is about $42/bottle in WV. Blantons is about $45. Spend your money on the original. Go here to find out how.

I did a quick search Bobby, and it seems that Stagg is from the BT Rye Mash Bourbon #1 mashbill, as confirmed by Chuck and Craig.

Also as they would say in Harry Potter, "He Who Shall Not Be Named", found a striking resemblance between Proprietor's Reserve and Stagg if it were filtered and cut down to 90 proof. That post can be found here. toast.gif

Absolutely not! I remember some critisizm of drinking high-proof whiskey straight up a while back, but that's how I like it! The most watered down my Stagg gets is with 1 small ice cube, and that's mostly because I like it a little cool. toast.gif

In my opinion it will resemble all of them, because I feel they all have this resounding "earthiness" to them that's hard to describe. At least their ryed bourbons do. That's not to say that Stagg won't be better, but it will still taste like BT bourbon yum.gif. YMMV

When the temp approaches 90 degrees, I tend to pop in a single cube, ala our friend One Cube Only. Other than that, it's straight all the way. smirk.gif

I am not gonna lie and claim to have my bourbon neat all the time. I think I split 50/50 going neat in a snifter and enough bourbon to comfortably float two medium sized ice cubes in an Old Fashioned glass. Often anymore, it seems to depend almost soley on what the bourbon I choose to drink is, very few get both treatments.

BTW George T Stagg is one of those few bourbons I do drink either with or without ice.

It's weird, but Stagg is one bourbon I can't seem to want to put ice in anymore. I used to put in a cube on occassion, but now I just like the mind blowing powers of straight Stagg. lol.gif But yes, cl is right, in the summer an occassional cube is a nice thing... Especially with the weather we've been having here lately!

Prior to the conversion of Leestown to Buffalo Trace, that distillery made only one bourbon formula. Obviously, anything they made 15 years ago is going to be from that formula. So at least in theory, something like Ancient Ancient Age (10 years old) would be in the ballpark. With the Stagg, however, you have 5 additional years, plus the selection process by which they found barrels that were truly outstanding. On paper, it's the same whiskey, but in reality it's very different. I can't think of anything from any other maker that has a similar profile. Actually, the Evan Williams Single Barrel 1992 that I tasted direct from the barrel (at similar proof to the Stagg) is the closest thing I can think of.

Sometimes i have a cold glass of water to keep cool while sipping bourbon... It won't dilute the bourbon unless you want it to...
