Spring Mill/Rebel Reserve questions

1) Anyone try Spring Mill? Limited distribution from a small operation in Indiana. Believe the juice is LDI? It is supposedly twice barreled and then packaged in a nifty stoneware bottle. Tasting comments or confirmation of the source of the juice welcomed.

2) The awesome Whiskey Tree say RY and RR are Luxco produced by HH. Can anyone confirm? My unrefined palate says yes on the Reserve. Had hoped some extra age would give it a boost over the Yell, but it must have been an extra five minutes or so. Still fell flat and thin with fruity notes but little barrel. Also backs up that I just don't like the HH wheaters as much as BT and MM.

I can't prove it's HH stock Dusty but have no reason to doubt it. Unfortunately it remains a price point brand.

For many years, Luxco actually had it on the Rebel Yell website that Heaven Hill is their supplier. It's no longer on the website but that's no reason to think anything has changed.

Thanks Chuck. I enjoy your blog by the way. It seems no matter the guise it takes I don't enjoy HH wheat expressions.

You need to try the Parkers Heritage Wheated. That will change your mind on HH wheaters.

Thanks. I actually scored a bottle recently but it and a Blanton's are the current sole occupants of my "bunker" (really it's more of a foxhole right now)and I haven't cracked them yet. Working thru the open bottles first.

I believe the Indy Star had an article recently that included someting about Spring Mill. I've seen it in stores. I passed it up because the price was steep. I will pay big numbers for price, when I see big numbers for proof or age.

I had hopes for the Reserve believing they had come up with a good idea, then I tried it and it's like they came up with a great play then fumbled the ball.

I've had the Spring Mill bourbon and it's good. I think it's worth the prices I've seen for it ($26 or so), but YMMV. It is cheaper than comparable LDI bourbons, rebarreled or not, and it's 90 proof which is something.

I recently noticed that Rebel Yell (regular) has a new bottle shape as in the taller ER, PVW, KBD etc style. They're selling a cherry and honey flavor too.

Thanks for the reply Josh. I've passed it by on multiple occasions but have been curious. May take a chance next time. Like to help out local producers.
