I picked up a dusty yesterday. It is a Wild Turkey 12 year old with a gold label. It is a 750. I picked it up for $40. Anybody know anything about it? On the same trip in a different store I found an '09 Handy rye for $65 and pounced on it.

Most folks around here would have pounced on the WT 12 and dropped and broke the Handy while doing it. The Gold Foil WT 12 year is some of the best Turkey you will find. Nice find.

Fabulous whiskey and certainly one of my very favorite bourbons of all time. Drink it and you'll find out why so many of us love it.

Good whiskey it is.

I've never had it, but I know now (after reading posts on this site) that I would not be so nonchalant about finding one... in the wild... for $40. How I wish that I was unaware of its reputation so I could innocently discover how good it is rather than pine for the day that I might get to taste it.

Where did you find it? Not asking for specifics but just curious of the story. I've been dusty hunting before and something like that would have been a gold find.

It is a fairly large regional store. I have shopped for bourbons there for years but they are usually a little overpriced with their regular prices. They do have a good "bourbon of the month" program where they have had EWSB for 19.99 and WR for $26. I had seen a few of these 12 year old Wild Turkeys there but didn't know much about them. I will try the one I got and if it as good as what has been said I might pick up a few more.

They have more? Go back and buy them all.

No kidding. I'm half tempted to knock of work early and head up there myself. (Got to pick up the kid by 6, though....maybe I could make it)

Okay - so I found a WT12 on the clearance shelf a few weeks ago. Picked up it for $30 because I hadn't seen in recent memory. How can I tell if it is Gold foil or split label?

Either of those things should he visually evident. They describe the labeling of the bottle.

Also that's the deal of the century for $30, either way.

Gold foil has really cheesy gold foil. It looks like this: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/wild-turkey-12-year-gold-foil-label-154455994

Split label literally has the front label in two pieces like it was split in half: http://www.bourbonenthusiast.com/dbimages/DSC_0416.jpg

Both are known to have good juice, but I can't comment on either as I have not been lucky enough to find them

Thanks @soonami - I have a split label. I was in a new area and popped into a tiny store. Pretty sparse selection - I almost walked out but decided to look around the a corner and found a clearance shelf. It was the only one. I had no idea so many people thought so highly of it. I'll save it for the right occasion.

There is sure to be a dot matrix printed bottling date on the neck if you are interested in such trivia. IIRC, it may even be on the tear off band.
