OK, I'm kind of a newbie to this stuff, so I might ask some dumb questions. This one is about speed.

To me, a "pour" is any where from 1 oz & 1/2, to 3 oz's.

How fast do you normally drink one pour? 15 minutes? 1/2 hour? an hour?

Probably a stupid question, as every one is different, but I'm just curious if there is a consensus on this.

I drink the 3rd one a lot faster than the 1st one. That's all I know for sure.

With me, just the opposite. The first one goes down fast, then they get progressively slower.

I try not to go over three, usually.

Size of the pour is arbitrary but time to consume really depends on what's in the glass... It took me about two hours to down a glass of Balvenie Tun the other night but other times it'll be gone in less than 5min.

Depends on what I am drinking. Barrel strength goes down really slow. At 100 proof and under it begins neat in a Glencair, then with just a drop of water, finally on the rocks. By the time I reach that point I have totally lost track of the time.

I remember Hemingway writing about this. He was an expert drinker. He always said to pace yourself and that way you would be able to handle it much better.

Of course, he was talking about drinking all day, pretty much every day, as he got older anyway.

Hey Alden, no offence but if you did a bit of searching through old posts to cover some of the basics the speed of your posts might be easier to keep up with.

as a newb myself .... just sayin

The search feature is fine but perhaps some subjects should be revisited from time to time.

Agreed, but this particular poster has sprayed questions at the speed of light in the last 6 hours on a wide range of newb topics.

IMO, its good etiquette to do a bit of digging (i.e. work) before/after joining a forum rather than expecting the existing members to do all the work for you - at least that's what I do.

For me I always pour 1oz, and it lasts 30min. I usually stick to about 3 different drams per night.

At least Alden didn't ask the value of a Pappy 23 and then ask if anyone wanted to buy it for 30 times what he paid. Newb here. I'll go crawl back to the hole I came out of.

So answer them or ignore them, your choice.

Thanks for that.

I know I'm asking a lot of newb questions, but like you said, revisiting can be a good thing.

Second that, sometimes our responses to newbies (and I'm admittedly am barely beyond) are plain mean. If you had a bad day at work, or now realize you'll never taste SW Pappy 20, take it out on your wife or kids, that's what they're there for. (In the interest of stiff-arming legal proceedings, I'm kidding about that last comment.) It's bourbon, not Dresden.

i agree with all that it depends on the bottle. my standard pours are not measured, are usually 100 proofers and take me about 15 mins. two big ways i end up increasing the speed of my consumption is on the rocks and in situations where you cant put your glass down. with ice in the glass, its like having a shot clock in basketball except on how your drink tastes. the more watered down it becomes the easier it goes down, but the quality of the taste decreases, so its a race against the ice melting. and in certain social settings where you are standing around with a glass in your hand, its just natural to want to lighten your arm's load a little quicker. when you are sitting at home and put your glass on a table, the choice to reach over and take a sip becomes a much more conscious decision.

Agreed! If there is anything to be jovial about, it's bourbon.

I usually drink from a Glencairn glass, neat, and fill it to the middle of the bulge or a little above, probably 2 oz. plus.

I average about 1 of these every 30-45 minutes, with 4 total being my usual maximum. Then again, sometimes . . . .

My at home pours are typically small-ish, about 3/4 oz. I would guess such a pour lasts me half an hour, or slightly less.

This is about the same for me. Except last night after posting in the "What bourbon are you drinking..." I had to go back and look at what I wrote to recall what I had as my 3rd pour, after my 4th and 5th drinks(which btw I did not post). See, revisiting does have an upside.

It was just one of those nights.

Generally for me a 50-70ml pour is on the schedule of 30-40 minutes, some BP stuff even longer generally never more that two in an evening.I will also have to add during the summer months a large bourbon on the rocks while grilling may only be a 10 minute task.

Hm.. I generally have only one or two drams in a night, and not every night at that. A 1.5oz to 2oz pour usually lasts about 20-40 minutes for me.
