straightwhiskeyruffneck
Seen this on their website. Looks like you have to buy a whole barrel, then they bottle the lot at 90 proof.Looks interesting, wonder if they'd bottle the juice at barrel proof?id be willing to go in on a barrel if that were so
BigBoldBully
When I saw this on the ttb, I assumed it was going to come out in bottles so I ran out and bought more birthday for fear of increased popularity and price. Good to hear it's this format (for now at least) instead. Shame they won't let you pick a proof above 90 for bottling "your" barrel, though. beerbrewer2000
I don't post normally, but this has my interest. If enough enthusiasm exists, I'd definitely consider going in on a barrel for a case or two!
gburger
I saw that each barrel yields 220-240 bottles. If you take the 230 as an average and $7,500 as the average price for a barrel, each bottle would cost $32-35 each. Not sure how many per case, if it is 12 that would be around 19 cases or around $400 per case. So 19 people would have to pony up.I'm in for a case.
mosugoji64
If we could pick something that tasted more like Bonded OF, this would be a very good idea. If it's just a spunkier version of current OF, I'll pass.
squire
Single barrel would by definition be BIB wouldn't it? Presuming it was made during one of the distilling seasons.
Jonny.Applebury
Since they're bottling it at 90 proof it isn't eligible to be labeled "Bottled in Bond."
mosugoji64
Yeah, it wouldn't be 100 proof, but I was referring to the flavor profile. I love that old Bonded OF profile and find that current OF pales by comparison. Not that it's bad, just not the same.

squire
Seems to me BF could use any label for which it has approval, which would actually include the old BIB label if they still have a box of those around.

squire
Yes, I understand, this is their program and their packaging. I'm just saying they could use another label if the customer wanted 100 proof. Whether they will or won't makes no difference to me, at that price I'll stay with the standard Signature brand.
callmeox
I'm not sure where the 7500/barrel number came from and I'm certainly not the barrel buying expert, but my understanding is that one doesn't work backward from a barrel price on these releases. Pricing for those I've been involved with worked out at (unit price) x (bottle yield) and the unit price was determined by the retailer and wholesaler. squire
Why 90 proof anyway? Is this some marketing move toward lower proof expressions?

gburger
I got the price from watching Chris Morris being interviewed. He said the barrel cost is around $7,500. I just did some guessing on the math.

I just did some guessing on the math.I seem to recall Bernie Lubbers saying last night at the HH tasting that at Heaven Hill they had about $125 in each barrel at the start. Don't know if that includes the barrel! And it probably doesn't include employees and overhead. Still, in 4 years that seems like a pretty decent profit! callmeox
A whole 4 points higher? Where's my checkbook. You asked about a marketing move toward lower proof expressions and this is obviously not the case. Fans of Old Forester who purchase a barrel will get more bourbon and less water than the standard bottling. It is not the Old Forester Signature single barrel program, but I suspect that if it was there would still be complaints about it. squire
Recon I'll just have to be content with the Signature then.
