squire
In a word, yes. Forester is one of the classics though no longer a bargain.
HighInTheMtns
Almost got one today. I saw it for $19.49.Is it worth a try?Which one? I'm guessing the Signature (100 proof.) Well worth it. Lots of impressions of that one in a recent BOTM thread. If it's the 86 proof, that price is a bit high.

HighInTheMtns
86 proof. I may be able to find the 100, or find a better price for the 86 by shopping around.Look for the 100, you've already discovered the benefits of going with higher proof. It should be right about $20 - which also leads to a natural match in a tasting with WT101.
WAINWRIGHT
I'll second what Jim has already stated,in which the 100 Signature is the one to go after and one of only a few within the BF profile that I truly enjoy.
HighInTheMtns
One other thing, Alden - I noticed your recent praise for WR. WR is mostly Old Forester whiskey, supplemented with a bit of the Versailles pot distillate. OF Sig is way cheaper than WR and in my opinion, and lots of other folks' too, better. You will definitely notice the family resemblance.
squire
That point can't be overemphasized, Forester and Woodford are owned by Brown-Forman, share the same mashbill and the the bottled version of Woodford contains whisky from both distillerys. Richnimrod
I agree with 'highinthemountains'. The Signature is a better deal for $20 or even a couple bux more. The 86 is a nice pour as well, but I prefer the Sig. The few extra bux gets you a few more points worth of ABV and, to my palate, also a bit more age (I do not know that to true, but it tastes that way to me). You should be able to grab the 86 for the $16 or $17 range. Both are tasty, and among the ones I usually have on hand.

GaryT
I like the OF Signature pretty well (thanks Richnimrod for the recommendation on it!), but honestly never thought of it like WR. I need to do a side by side of those. I knew they were both BF, but Woodford (which isn't one of my regular pours) always seemed very clean, where OFS seemed to have more spiciness. squire
One of the older Forester body style has finger grooves or dimples on the sides of the bottle.

squire
Gary I believe a side by side with Forester and Woodford would be a very good idea and would be interested in your findings.
GaryT
Gary I believe a side by side with Forester and Woodford would be a very good idea and would be interested in your findings. I think I've got some homework for tomorrow Not that I need a lot of encouragement in that department, but beats whatever I had planned for a Wednesday night! Squire - would you dilute the OFS to the same as the WR, or just blind-test at bottled proof? I'm leaning towards dilution to make it as blind/fair as possible, although I don't throw any water in my OFS typically.
squire
I would compare them blind just as they are for the first drink.
Grain Belt
OFS is a fantastic pour. I had a fun experience where I gave my old man a bottle for a gift and he straight up loved it. He couldn't stop talking about how good it is. It was pretty cool because my dad has been a bourbon guy for 50 years and he taught me how to sip and savor " sour mash" as he calls it. it was fun to introduce him to a great product that isn't readily available in rural Minnesota were he lives. Alden
Well the only one I could find was the 86 proof, so that will have to do for now. Can't wait to crack it open!
GaryT
Due to some combination of rain/pollen, not able to do a proper tasting - but I can acknowledge that Jim and Squire were spot on. Both are more similar than I recalled for sure. I didn't pay enough attention the last few times I tried WR. It is more clean than OFS, which I found to be softer on the palate (despite being higher proof). Not getting much of the typical vanilla/caramel (which I attribute to the sinus issue), but I get a bit of black cherry - in both. Look forward to trying this again in the future! Alden
I just had a taste of this 86 and it really is similar to WR! Not as intense or complex, but the base flavor and mouth feel is the same.
squire
Not as intensely costly either.
