Grain Belt
I am sitting here drinking a Cabin Still on the rocks. I am enjoying it just fine. Is there something wrong with me? I have enjoyed some of the finest high end bourbon in the world, yet I always still enjoy the bottom shelfers. I have grown to believe my palate feels that there is no such thing as a bad bourbon. Some are just better than others. I may also be a little drunk. Feel free to discuss.
BFerguson
Nope you have company, maybe a MN thing?Sitting here with some VOB BIB for the night, was eyeing some WSR 7yr, earlier, but decided not to open one.Need to pick up another VROHH 8yr, last one ran dry not long ago. Nothing wrong with them at all.B
squire
Nothing at all wrong with enjoying good whisky and since it's a daily commodity around our house I see no reason to pay more than necessary.
black mamba
I always like to try new things, but truth be told, if I was "stuck" with only HHW BIB the rest of my life, I'd be pretty happy.
squire
When it comes to Bourbon I drink two brands, Barton and Grand Dad, almost exclusively. I could easily drink other brands, have tried most of them all over the years, but choose to stay with these two favorites.

I'm not a Cabin Still fan, nor any of the offerings from Dickel, but almost any of the lower shelf Bourbons I've tried do hit me right, at least on some occasions. If it tastes OK to you, then DRINK IT whenever you wish to do so. ... Hey; the enjoyment of the lower shelfers is a blessing, eh?

Lazer
Nope, you're the normal one. The people that aren't normal are the people that associate high price with high quality. We all know that this is false.

squire
Quite so, the whisky coming out of the still is exactly the same quality whether it is aged for 2 years or 12. The two will have different characteristics of course, and the older one will cost more to produce, but the quality is the same.

squire
There's another one somewhere to the effect that good whisky makes good company.
bllygthrd
"There's whiskey, and there's good whiskey, but there's no bad whiskey."TimAgree! Got home from work and poured myself three fingers of AA 80 proof ... right now, this minute, its the best damn bourbon in the world!
deathevocation
This thread made me question my judgement and pull out my bottle of Cabin Still. I had been enjoying EW Black, so my palate was not dominated by a big whisky. Poured a glass of Cabin Still and yep, as I remembered..........no taste whatsoever! It's Heaven Hill right? Surely the bottom of the barrel product?
Danger
Drinking what you like? It's hard to see what's wrong with you for that. When it comes to Bourbon I drink two brands, Barton and Grand Dad, almost exclusively. I could easily drink other brands, have tried most of them all over the years, but choose to stay with these two favorites. But variety is the spice of life, no?There was an old Gaelic quote I read in Playboy about 45 years ago. I cannot reproduce the original language, but the translation was, "There's whiskey, and there's good whiskey, but there's no bad whiskey."Awesome. PaulO
There's nothing wrong with liking Cabin Still. When I tried it for the first time, I noticed a flavor like butterscotch life saver candy that jumped out at me. That was a number of years ago. I still detected that taste in later bottlings, but way in the background.

black mamba
I'm drinking my lower shelf, high rye blend tonight of 4RYL and OGD BIB. Costs $14 a fifth and tastes an awful lot like ETL, which is twice the price. It pays to experiment.
Flyfish
I'm drinking my lower shelf, high rye blend tonight of 4RYL and OGD BIB. Costs $14 a fifth and tastes an awful lot like ETL, which is twice the price. It pays to experiment. Is that a 50/50 vatting? Or should I just experiment?Love ETL. At half the price I love it twice as much. Plus, I can get 4RYL & OGD locally. No ETL around here. Edited April 29, 2013 by Flyfish
Alden
I'm finding there is a lot of lower shelf and middle shelf that is excellent. Old Forester 86 proof tastes an awful lot like Woodford Reserve to me.
