Weller 12 with Embossed Wheat Symbol

I found some more W12 1 liter bottles with the embossed wheat. The date code was hard to read, but it looked like 2011. That can't be right can it? When did they stop using the embossed bottles and why are those bottles of W12 "better?"

I purchased a liter bottle of W12 last fall (2012) that had the embossed wheat emblem on the bottle. Have never seen it on a 750, however.

What does that mean exactly? I buy 1 liter bottles of Weller 12 at Spec's all the time.. I have seen the embossed wheat on liter bottles as well.

In a lot of states, maybe not Texas, 1 liter is usually shipped to bars/restaurants, this helps the liquor inspector know that tax was properly paid for on premise license (IE Bar). 750ml and 1.75lt is usually sizes used for off premise (liquor store) A bar can order in any size they just may have to present more receipts to the inspector when not serving at 1 liter.

Don't know when they stopped making that bottle, but I bought some back in 2011 and that's the last time I've seen them.

IIRC, that style was discontinued in 2011. Seeing as they sell far more 750 and 1.75L than 1L, it's reasonable to assume they had a lot of leftover 1L bottles, hence why you still run into newer ones.

Thanks for the replies. Originally, I found a 750 and a 1.75 and it was suggested to me that those were good finds even though I don't care for the current W12. Glad I passed on them. Now I wonder if the person who told me that was just pulling my leg. :skep:

Having it in liters also makes it easier to count your bar stock

I could see that, if it's not in the well though we tend to carry only .750ml anything bigger takes up too much room on the shelf.

Since I am kind of getting called out on this I will put-forth my theory (at least the theory I follow) on the embossed glass Weller 12. The W12's that came out right after the paper label were in the current style bottle but had wheat stalks embossed on the front of the bottle. Shortly after that the wheat stalks disappeared and were not seen again. Today the bottle has a smooth front surface. All of this pertains to the 750ml size. I have noticed that some of the 1lt. and 1.75lt can still carry the embossed glass. My theory is that most of the glass with markings signifying the possible date it was made is closer to being "right on" for the 750ml size of at least the Weller line. I have come across many 375ml that have had 00 on the glass but a undisputed digital laser date on them showing 2006. Same for some of the 1.75Ml bottles. I once brought home several 1.75's of what was supposed to be 2004 OWA (the 04 on the glass) and turned out to actually be 2005's according to the laser dates. All in all I feel that the better of the W12's after the paper label ones (which most were SW) are the ones right after the paper label went away. My personal preference is for the embossed glass W12 (750) over any of the current W12.
