Current price for A.H. Hirsch

Anybody know what the going price for a bottle of the 16 y.o. A.H. Hirsch is?

The humidor set is the currently available retail version for like $1500. Besides that, this thread is probably a bad idea.

Sorry if this question is considered not appropriate. As I have seen many, many posts in the forums discussing prices of just about everything out there, I did not think this question to be "out of line". Simply quirious. If it is deemed inappropriate please feel free to delete it.

There aren't many, many posts here discussing prices.

Offer what it's worth to you. If that isn't enough, go buy something else. Lotsa good whiskey in the world.

Actually, there are probably 10,000+ posts on SB.com discussing price on everything on a shelf somewhere, comparisons of what something costs around the U.S., what bottles were just purchased and how many and at what price, and on dustys of all sorts - and there is always a thread on the current BTAC and Pappy release prices.

The problem that bjhowell probably doesn't realize he has stumbled into are those who join just to get a price on something that could be hot on the secondary market.

This is probably not obvious to someone relatively new to the forum - hope it doesn't discourage you from posting, bjhowell, if you feel you were ambushed. If you were trolling, well, this is why you got the reaction that you did.

No offense taken. As the poster above said, there are reams of posts discussing prices on everything, including this bottling. So I didn't think anything of it. My inquiry was simply based on trying to figure out if this was something in the realm of possibility of me trying some day. I don't buy bottles to sell or collect. I buy them to drink. That said, I understand the sensitivity and the reasoning behind the reactions (especially with some people trying to turn bourbon from a drink to a commodity). Please accept my apologies.

Howell (sorry, I can't bring myself to address you as bj) it's the hot ticket bottles that raise eyebrows. If you'd asked about Grand Dad BIB, Knob Creek, Elijah Craig or any commonly obtainable bottle the response would have been different.

I bought a half case of Hirsch 16 (that was the store limit per customer) a couple of decades back just because it was unique. I think the fact it was no longer made and there were very few older Bourbon expressions (Pappy was 16 years old back then) during that era is what started the somewhat elevated position the brand became. I kept some around for years, occasionally serving it to guests who liked whisky enough to drink it neat, but was never under the impression it was anything more than what it was, a well crafted whisky that was older than usual. In fact today if I were your guest and you offered me a choice of Michters 16 or Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition I would choose the Four Roses without hesitation.

The most noteworthy thing about Michter's 16 is the price and prices are driven by label conscious folks who have disposable income.

I've tasted it. I put it in the pile of really good bourbons I've tried (there are many). Contribute here, hang around a while, go to some tasting events and you will taste it too. Someone may even trade you a bottle someday.

And welcome to the forum, bjhowell. Like Kevin said, make some friends, spend some time, you'll get a pour eventually. It's good, and it's in the "pile of really good bourbons I've tried (there are many)."

For poops and laughter, I messaged a guy on that other site about a case of Hirsch 16yr gold foil bourbons. For 12 bottles he wanted nearly 6 figures.

I may have talked to the same person . . . I recently found a source (playing like a store owner or distributor) who had 12 bottles (gold foil) for sale, maybe other has seen this, I offered him more than I should and that was $200 each. I would rate this as a $80 bottle only. So I was being stupid. Especially just three years ago, I walked away from three bottles at below $200.

The best thing to do for AH Hirsch 16 is to try it at the Bellagio $5 Video Poker if they still have it. Read the book by Chuck for the history while drinking your JPS17 you bought which has a QPR of 25.5x better.

The point that seems to be being missed is that the thing we don't talk about on this board is illegal transactions. Except for a very few A. H. Hirschs that might still be available at retail, any transaction involving A. H. Hirsch is most likely on the secondary market. Secondary market transactions are illegal and, therefore, not discussed on this board.

At a recent, legal, Bonham's auction, A. H. Hirsch 16 gold capsule bottles sold for between $500 and $800 each.

Was fortunate(?) enough to taste one as part of the "Indy Gazebo" and to my untrained palate it tasted like wet cardboard or damp leaves. Granted this taste was after some WLW,GTS, and multiple S-W iterations so YMMW as they say. But I'm not fussed if I can't get one of these.

Some people like this and others don't.

I'm with you as I couldn't even finish my pour when I had it. But this was the gold foil at Bellagio so not sure what may have happened there. I get the same satisfaction as when I drink my bottle of modern OWA.

I sampled the same bottle at a previous gathering with a rather clear palate. The result was the same, so I think your perception was right on.
