A friend was nice enough to come over with a Pappy 23 that we cracked open. Doesn't seem as woody as the other bottles I remember. It's some fine bourbon.

Uncle-in-law and family stayed with us for the weekend. Lots of good times, but hot enough weather that more beer was being consumed than bourbon.

Late on Saturday night, topics turned to finance and economics, which IMHO go best with whiskey; I poured some OGD 114 on rocks for conversational inspiration.

Nice afternoon smoking some ribs yesterday on my new WSM. It was hot as a bitch here in Chicago due to high humidity, so I kept myself plenty hydrated with cheap beer (Genesee Cream Ale) and a steady drip of JTS Brown BIB. I don't know what it is but that stuff sure goes well with grilling and 'cuing!

Went to see a comedian saturday night, afterwords we wandered into a bar that had some old paper label OWA 7yr... delcious pour! and some weller 12 with the crossed wheat embossed, it was much less oaky and much more butterscotch than current bottles of w12 i have at home.

My first pour of HH BiB gold label. Nice straight, but opened up and became more fruity with a couple drops of water. Straightforward with vanilla, carmel, and fruit. After a very long moment, there was a slight vegetal component on the finish, while a bit odd, was so subtle that I thought it added an interesting note to an otherwise straightfoward but very enjoyable pour.

I still find it amazing what great pours you can get for such a reasonable price - I think this was $10 for a 750ml. Amazing what great value bourbon can deliver - if this was all I had to drink, I would still be very happy.

I know what you mean. I've had similar experiences with several "budget" whiskeys (VOB BIB and Dixie Dew come to mind) and can never believe my good fortune after laying out so little money on a bottle.

AAA tonight.

THe morning after after is almost as good nosing the caramel scent wafting from the empty glass.

It's always the pre-coffee requisite to give a sniff to the previous nights glass to see what I can pick up.

OWA on rocks. Pretty good in the hot & humid!

DW calls me a "hardy New Englander"... I'd rather be sitting on the porch with a nice cool whiskey even if it's hot and humid then up in the bedroom with the air conditioning. I just prefer the fresh air.

On the other hand, the a/c makes it much easier to sleep!

Had another pour of the basic Bowman Brothers SmB, and once again really enjoyed it. At under $30, this could easily become one of my staples, with the likes of ETL, FR1B, EC 12, etc. Just a nice nose and flavor to me.

Opened a lot12 and had a dram, moved on to a pointless BT old fashioned, then had a ER10 old fashioned and now having a very potent bookers old fashioned to end the night.

Wild Turkey 101. Hadn't had this in some years and was much impressed by the current iteration. Rye-forward, on the dry side, synergistic with rocks to the max. A classic.

Rule #1: Chores first. As life around this house has been crazy busy over the past week, I finally took down the bunting from July 4th.

One of the chores was to rotate a few winter-time bottles from the cabinet bar down to the basement (strong, chewy, contemplative, or peaty whiskies need to slumber until at least after Labor Day). Up from the basement came a liter of OGD BiB and EWSB vintage 2003, both ready to be cracked open.

DW is off at a business function, so I felt free to have a pour while making dinner. I love the EWSB 2003; the gentle oaky note goes well with a gen-u-wine New York City sesame bagel and a couple of hard-boiled eggs from the dozen that a co-worker gave me.

After dinner, I'm right now enjoying OGD BiB on rocks and contemplating having a piece of Italian-style pastry from the box that was left as a thank you by last weekend's houseguests. If I'd read SB.com a few minutes earlier, it'd be ETL, but instead, I'll finish the evening with a pour in memory of the man. A toast to a long and full life!

Had some Elmer T Lee. Then moved to Larceny and then finished off the remaining Black Maple Hill and then the last of the Rittenhouse Rye - - sweet Jesus finishing off two bottles in one night. Selah. "Henry whatever will I do?" Buy more she said, buy more.
