The French Spirits Forum- Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados

L ‘Encantada on ice for happy hour before a German-themed dinner at home tonight.  That buttery finish fit the pretzels and sour cream dip like a hand in a glove OR a French Kiss.

I picked up a bottle of corvousier vsop and I enjoy it. I also grabbed a half bottle of calvados from total wine on a whim because I like Lairds. I have no clue if it's a good expression, but it's unique and interesting to me, and very worth the $18.

Any recommendations for a newbie?

Either for sipping neat or for mixing in New Orleans style cocktails.

Delord 25yr Armagnac is a good intro to that spirit.  If you like bourbon, you'll probably enjoy it.  It was my gateway Armagnac.  Total Wine usually has it..

Spoiler

Delord XO 15yr

My initial impression wasn't very good. The flavor felt really weak the first crack of the bottle. It is much more present now.

Torres 10 (Spanish brandy)

Surprisingly good. Very strong grape brandy flavor, but a little astringent. It isn't noticeable in a cocktail at all.

I still haven't opened the 10 generations yet...

Sad to see my last bottle of this one go.  I bought a few of these from K&L in the mid aughts and I've been nursing this one for quite a while.  They were the exclusive west coast distributor then but they haven't carried it for years.  A really good Cognac with lots of dept and complexity for a vsop.  If you see a bottle from this producer, don't hesitate to pick it up.

The exact same thing I'm going through as well... but my bottle of choice is from Luxembourg.

The distiller is Pitz-Schweitzer of Luxembourg.  I'm down to my last shot. I have to figure out how to import more, but the problem is that Pitz won't export outside its own country (except for a few Belgian Stores).  If anyone knows of an import service (ie. they buy it there retail and thenpkg it up and ship it), that would be wonderful and something for which I'd be willing to pay.  Gotta be cheaper than flying all the way over there to collect it.

Just an update...the delord is amazing. The ferrand 10 generations is a strong pass. It tastes like young bitter grapes.

Two Yaks from the other night.  Same vintage but the Cardinat was bottled at 19 years in oak and the Darroze at 16.  The Cardinat is a monster.  Huge oak, fruit and caramel on the nose and palate.  Wood dominates the palate but there's enough sweetness from the fruit to make it all work.  But it comes across like a pirate bottle ECBP.  The Darroze is much more elegant, sweet and sublime, without the woody, tannic punch of the Cardinat.  Of course, it was 50% more expensive.  Armagnac is such a unique, delicious spirit..

Duffau Hors d’Age has become a staple on those nights when I need a quality Armagnac at a decent price.

Quality Armagnac at a decent price is getting harder to find.  What does this one run?

Huh?  This is what you chose for your first post?  To each his own, but just a word of advice, ... you might want to lay off the alcohol or illegal drugs buddy.

Yeah, calvados is nice, but I would have rather liked to unlock a few things and have a memorable and unique experience with Brigitte Bardot’s terroir, to be honest…😘

Thanks for the reminder.  I kind of forgot this was opened as it had slipped to the back of the counter.  This was my gateway Armagnac as I was unfamiliar with the genre until my sister gifted me a bottle.  While not the most complex 'Yak", it's really solid and a great intro for anyone looking to explore the category.  It's pretty available and relatively affordable especially given the age statement.

The gifted one is long gone.  The open one is, I think, my third bottle - but who's counting...  And, it won't be the last; I think I have one more in the bunker.
