The May GQ has an article titled - The New Whiskey Rebellion ...

"Not all that long ago, appreciating whiskey meant boring your friends with peat profiles or sucking up to your father-in-law on the golf course. Now, thanks to a new generation of genius bartenders and rebel distillers, whiskey is the official drink of the people. Here, the best bottles to own, distilleries to know, cocktails to make, and ten next-level bars where the only thing smarter than ordering whiskey is ordering another."

In the early 1960s GQ articles on Bourbon barely skimmed the surface and 50 years later that hasn't changed.

There is a lot of stiff competition this year for horrid attempts at bourbon writing: Parker, the Chef Boy, GQ, and over on the Premium Bourbon thread, a leading contender: "10 Most Expensive Bourbons to Try." Superficial treatment is one thing. Inexcusably ignorant is another.

Excellent point, FF. That's why I would like to propose a designated full forum for "Dumbshit things people who don't know shit about bourbon say, write, and broadcast just so they can hitch a ride on the bourbon train." Put it up top so every visitor can see it, and can view it as we totally and publicly humiliate their dumbshittedness :D here. These pukes are nothing but leaches trying to suck some credibility in the subject of our passion. Yes, they'll soon move on to another new and "hip" subject to suck on, but we should smack the slimy bastards around, before they leave.

Damn we finally fell off the GQ top ten whiskey bar list. Still got more juice than Longman and Drum bar combined... but we'll just keep it for ourselves then let the dbags drink all of Longmans stuff hahaha

hitch a ride on the bourbon train

Actually it doesn't sound so bad when you put it that way.

Actually, I have little use for bad writing in general. If one cannot express thoughts clearly the sentiments should be rethought.

I like two things about it. First, getting Julian Van Winkle to recommend substitutes for his products was genius, and Julian gave good ones. Second, the end of the article links back to the beginning so those made stupid by reading it can immediately read it again.

Really, just about everything else is stupid, but it reflects how a lot of young guys, especially the type who read GQ, are experiencing the whiskey phenomenon, which is very superficially.

The main conceit of sallow youth is that only they and their peers know anything.

Do as many people judge seniors on the contents of their AARP magazine as they do the younger generation's throw away magazines? Poor un-researched articles aren't confined to any one source, nor are they indicative of any generation's experiences or attitudes to anything.

Sometime in the next two days, I will use this quote in a discussion with my son ...

Gave up my AARP membership years ago. Still get the discounts just nobody asks to see the card anymore.

The problem with most of these articles is that the factual basis isn't a whole lot worse than many (not all) of the distillery tour guides. We do have a thread about that, and I've heard some pretty crazy stuff there as well. Like the final filtration being done to remove remaning grains that somehow survived evaporation and condensation.
