Tony, Thanks for the interesting insight. Since I also tend not to buy the under fifth sizes, I don't pay attention to their price.

Crowes, Good advice - either know your prices before entering the store or only frequent stores that you can trust.

One good thing about ABC pricing is you know if you're getting screwed.

I've got a running list of bottles to check out and I put the minimum price on there. I keep it in Evernote and pull it up on my phone.

Where is 'Tippins' located?

PM sent. The guy who does their barrel picks - dominick - is a nice guy, always good to talk to.

The good thing about control state pricing is you know that you're getting screwed. It will never cost more than what a bureaucrat thinks is fair. It will never cost less either.

Not in Michigan. Pricing wise we get the worst of both worlds. You'll never get a sale or a deal since they can't go below state minimum, but there is nothing stopping them from gouging you to their heart's content.

Now I do have to say, MI is one of the better states selection wise among the control states.

In Kalamazoo, we have many stores falling all over themselves to charge state minimum, and of course a few stores charge a couple bucks more. (By "a couple," I mean approximately two.) And Michigan has TWICE the selection of any other control state, so it's not all bad.

I only know of two stores in my town that charge state min. I know of about 5 others with big bold signs proclaiming that they do so, but their whiskey prices are routinely 10-15 more per bottle.

I agree that selection wise we do ok. It was just quite a transition going from Tennessee to MI for me...(some of that is a factor of the times though...as when I was shopping in TN in 09 or 10 I would routinely pass by bottles that most would kill for today...and I doubt those bottles are still sitting around the Nashville stores today)

The situation where I live is similar to that in Kalamazoo. Most places stick pretty close to state minimum here too. Sorry about the shitty stores near you nd!

Still amazes me that states normally considered progressive if not just outright liberal are beverage controlled. I guess it's sort of like the federal govt, once an agency is created it never goes away and that's the reason we will always have Obamacare no matter who has the majority.

Washington State went against that trend a couple years ago and privatized. Unfortunately, it resulted in the highest liquor taxes in the country.

I don't know about elsewhere in MI; but in Downriver Detroit, the selection is fine for 'regular' offerings; but special release stuff is as rare as hens' teeth. The last BTAC release was almost nonexistent, and NO Parker's Heritage at all...don't even ask about Pappy! I had a chance at any ONE of the BTAC and that was IT! ....As long as I could get there within an hour or so. Not that I'm complaining. I'm getting kinda burned out trying to find these 'unicorns'. I'm happy with what I can buy, or mingle from the more available stuff.

Just sayin'.

I'm going through AA today and I gave Dominic a call. He said he hasn't heard yet on the bottles. Said still waiting it hear about the proof and how many bottles. He said he thinks he'll know more in two weeks.

On similar note, anyone hear anything about when the 4RSB LE might be landing?

I was talking with the guy at Kakos's Market a while back and he said a distributor had approached him about picking a Four Roses barrel strength offering for his store. He proudly told me that he asked the distributor why he would ever do that and ended up doing a 1792 barrel instead. That's the moment I decided not to shop there anymore.

I'm not a fan of that store at all, they think they are much more knowledgable than they are.

Has not hit AA to my knowledge. I'm hearing this week or next - likely only 2-3 stores getting any

Who and where is AA? Thx.
