I've found a number of "hipster" bar/restaurants in the Seattle area that surprise me with a good selection and price. My favorite right now is a bar in Ballard that has THH for $12 neat, or in a manhattan for $15 (the only other THH manhattan I've ordered was at a steakhouse for $40 at a company dinner). I imagine all big cities have places that cater to a neighborhood and don't get press or marketing, but are still able to offer good products if they are located in a higher income area.

I find those "hipster" places, especially those that take their cocktails seriously, tend to have exceptional whisky lists. My current favorite in my city (Minneapolis) is called Marvel Bar and they have an extremely extensive bourbon list, not to mention nice assortment of scotches, Japanese malts, and various odd and ends. This place has everything from Cabin Still to PVW23. All served in Glencairn glasses also.

@dbm if you find yourself in downtown Seattle near Pike's Place - make sure to walk down the steps under the market and stop at the Zig Zag - http://zigzagseattle.com/. Very good bourbon selection and mostly reasonable prices. Make sure to ask for the "captain's list" - which has all the goodies on it. Once they figure out you know bourbon they take very good care of you. I was offered several 1/2 servings and a few tastes. I'm in Seattle at least once a year at the convention center for a week and this place becomes a de rigueur stop each evening.

I havent found many of those bars here in bourbon country. Many that take cocktails seriously and with an extensive bourbon list but most charge a premium price for the rareish (not a word i know) bourbons. The best bargain I have found was PVW23 for $29 per pour (looked like a 1.5 oz pour).

We are lucky to have some excellent bars around here - next time you're in town, ping us and maybe some of us can synch up!
