gooneygoogoo
Headed to The Trail for 2 days at the end of Sept. We have our distillery itinerary pretty much figured out. I wanted to see if I could get some suggestions on where to buy private barrel selections in the area (which stores do a good job of picking good barrels). I know private selections are everywhere up there and it's hard for someone like me, who has never been on the Trail to know who picks good barrels and who might not. Any suggestions? Thanks! theglobalguy
During or around the KBF your choices get a bit better (they did last few yrs and below assumes the stores picks will show up in time);- Packages & More in Etown (Eric will hopefully chime in with what choices we can expect?!)- Liquor Barn in Louisville - St Matthews (Shelbyville rd has been stepping up their game lately, some great 4R SB)- Liquor Barn in Louisville/Lexington - Other locations technically separate from St Matthews- Liquor World in Bardstown (had some great Willett last yr)- Westport Whiskey in Louisville And if you're heading up to Cincy area, Cork n Bottle and TPS. MyOldKyDram
And of course the Four Roses gift shop.
theglobalguy
And of course the Four Roses gift shop.Oops, forgot that. Imagine some great picks around then both in Cox's Creek and in Lawrenceburg.
Sasquatch
Some other Louisville stores that weren't mentioned are Party Mart, Party Center, and Evergreen Liquors.

GaryT
And of course the Four Roses gift shop. My first thought was "That Jim Rutledge guy picks some winners."
gooneygoogoo
Thanks for all of the suggestions. So many stores to check out, so little time. Funny, I read in another thread about "Eric's store in Elizabethtown" and thought the name of it was "Eric's" or something like that. I'm sure I'll pick up some FR at the gift shop. A friend of mine was in the area a couple months ago and said the private selections of stuff like ETL, KCSB, ER10, etc were plentiful and I was thinking "how can I know if the KCSB at store X or store Y has better odds of being a good pick". I'm sure they are all good, y'all have pointed me in the right direction though and I appreciate it. This place is awesome.
Sasquatch
Pretty sure the components of last year's LESmB were all available in single barrel picks at the gift shop. The 17 year OBSV.... fantastic.
MyOldKyDram
Here's hoping they do the same this year...
callmeox
Due to the timing of your visit, don't hold on to all of your money counting on getting barrel selections in Bardstown. Traditionally, if any are of a decent quality they evaporate from the shelves during KBF.

wadewood
At the Willett gift shop, they will let you sample various SB prior to purchase which is the best way to ensure you are getting something you like.
gooneygoogoo
Is there one Liquor Barn that is bigger/has more selection than the others (not just private selections, just in general)?
Sasquatch
I can't comment on that because I haven't been to all of them. I can note that in Louisville, the Saint Matthews location is under different ownership and has different private barrels than the rest of the stores. The Hamburg Pike store in Lexington is the nicest, in my opinion.
theglobalguy
Is there one Liquor Barn that is bigger/has more selection than the others (not just private selections, just in general)? In general the selection seems close from location to location (maybe they balance inventory on purpose). Will say both the St Matthews and Springhurst locations in Louisville do a very good job of keeping the place clean, tidy and easy to find. MyOldKyDram
Personally I prefer the Beaumont store in Lex. But really they're mostly all the same.
P&MLiquorsEric
I don't normally check this area.My store is in Elizabethtown. Currently we have some solid four roses private barrels. OESF and OBSF. Chances are we will be sold out by late September. The OESF is sold out "to the public". We have some left in my office for SB visitors. We are hoping to have two willett barrels in soon. A 6 yr and a 10 yr. It has been nearly 9 months since we started the process fwiw. The BT selections will not be in stock until November. We would invite anyone visiting in at any time. Talking shop is always fun. But I would preface that by saying if you are looking for rare/bourbon porn bottles, look elsewhere first. It's been said before but they don't last long and many never see the shelf. Bourbon is hot, especially in KY.
P&MLiquorsEric
Is there one Liquor Barn that is bigger/has more selection than the others (not just private selections, just in general)? They will all have nearly every "normal" offering from mid shelf to bottom shelf in stock. Limited offerings are tough to get at any "high volume" retailer.I would recommend the liquor barn in st Matthews. Still American owned and run by the guy who started and put them on the map. The others are owned by a publicly traded Canadian company.
