Yesterday I picked up a bottle of Knob Creek Single Barrel "barrel #415 hand selected by Fred Noe" for a grocery store. Anyway, upon opening I noticed that the wax seemed to come off more easily, and the top was a screw cap. If I recall correctly, the previous bottles of KC always had a cork. It appears to be nearly impossible to tell the difference between the two without trying to open the bottle.

ive been into KCSB for about 6 months or so, theyve all been screw tops. but i have heard they used to be corks.

i kinda prefer the screw tops, theyre more convenient. but the cork does seem more classy

I like the screw tops better. too. I think Knob had tried this change before (maybe you're looking at some older stock?).

My understanding is that they went back to the corks after getting alot of negative feedback.

I Beam again trying the screw tops, I wonder?

The first versions of KC cork closure were covered by a hard black wax that was a gripe to remove. I solved the issue with a heavy chief's knife while wearing oven mitts.

During our tour of Beam in April they were using screwcaps and I commented that I thought they used corks. Our tour guide said they had changed to screwtops to save money, but due to "overwhelming feedback" they were going back to corks in the near future. I thought "Who the @#$% is complaining about that?!?!?!" I'd much rather have screwtops on everything

only advantage I see to cork is for small production like micro-distillery or hand bottling a single barrel or limited release product. even those folks are moving toward synthetics these days.

Are you kidding me? Same here. I like to keep a bottle of KCSB in my nightstand drawer, and I'm afraid a cork closure might leak.

With about 4 fingers of KCSB and a squeeze of lemon in it!

 Ok, if it's for Joe, they get a pass ;)

I just dread the thought of losing any more of my premium juice to the angles (I mean - c'mon - they got their fair share the first time around!)

I know, I know - there is something to be said for the noise that cork makes when pulled from the bottle. I'm all game for a compromise - everything between $20-$30 gets corked, and the rest get screwed (or . . . capped? Ok - both of those don't work in this context ) The bottles I'm going to have open for a long time - I'd prefer a screwcap to save me from otherwise having to wrap the tops (waiting for my parafin film at Christmas!)

Not all screw caps are equal, either. I abhor the Jim Beam metal screw caps - they dent easily and can fail to seal.
