Downloaded and listened to Mark Gillespie's interview with Preston Van Winkle this morning. According to Preston, this is the last year that PVW23 will be exclusively S-W product. Otherwise, nothing especially new in the interview, except that BT is discussed more openly as the current producer of PVW, and that the Weller bourbons are essentially "young versions of PVW."

I say glass half empty, you say glass half full

I say po-tay-to, you say po-tah-to

He says Weller is a young version of PVW, I say PVW (with the possible exception of current 20&23) is a more expensive hyped-up version of Weller.

Marketers always see their glass as half full - even if it contains shyte.

"Journalists" like M Gillespie that depend on the industry for their paychecks tend not to question the marketing spin from the likes of PrestonVW.

I'd prefer they not advertise that OWA or W12 is related to PVW in any way/shape/form. Let them have all the PVW and flip it back/forth.

People know they just don't care. Weller will ever hold that kind of shine for a certain segment of people.

What people are buying is a sense of status and exclusivity. That and what others recognize as an expensive item. Once a label achieves that level there will always be those who will buy it.

Squire, is that a bad thing? Specifically, should we think less of the Van Winkle's and Buffalo Trace because their label has attained that lofty status?

Not by me Joe, I was speaking of consumers, not producers, and my comment equally applies to Mercedes, Rolex and Vuitton luggage.

Those with disposable income want status symbols and if I were a producer I would certainly want my product to be one.

Righto. There's one thing that I think is often missed when discussing Julian III, particularly here on SB over the last couple of years. And, that is, the tremendous amount of hard work that he put into the brand since he started it. All he had was a quirky two-word name, an idea where great whiskey was, and a willingness to put his money and sweat where his mouth was. Obviously, nobody but the parties involved know the terms of his association with BT regarding the VW brand, but I hope it is such that he cleans up. And, if those fruits come from the wallets of the status seekers on their latest extravagance, then all the better.

Emphasis on hardworking. He made his way. It wasn't given to him.

Sure, hard work is a key ingredient but being a member of the lucky sp*rm club doesn't hurt. Any last name other than VW would probably not have resulted in the same success.

Of course not. To think it "doesn't hurt" would be silly. But, a lot of men in a lot of businesses crapped out on that because the thought that was all it would take. JVW III got his hands dirty, and expended some BS& T's along the way.

Just discussed this today actually, the end of an era but I'm sure great juices will continue to flow, though different as it may be.

ORVW15 was my first obsession which carry to PVW. For the longest time only SW was what I like to drink.

It is amazing what PVW has become and what Julian had done to this brand.

As long as I can get the offerings at reasonable price, max is 2X, and it taste great, I'll continue to support it.

Unless they are running out of barrels, I was hoping it would be 1992 + 23 = 2015 before PVW23 ends to be 100%. Anyhow, I'm still happy that this year PVW23 is still 100% since I thought it was discussed previously that for this new release both 20 and 23 would not be.

Agreed, Ryan. I think BT has proven that they can produce a very good wheater, and I'll bet most of us in the enthusiast community are past the whole "S-W percentage puzzle". Also I think the exclusivity seeking target market referred to in earlier posts, is totally oblivious to what was, what is, and what will be. Speaking for myself though, I'm just looking for the brand to deliver the finest wheated bourbon whiskey that BT can muster. I'll then, take it from there.

Well i suppose this means my one bottle I buy this year will be the 23 year, instead of the 20.

I will be paying retail. I won't be waiting in line. Thank goodness for a reliable store owner.

I thought I just read something written by Chuck C. quoting Julian saying that since 2012, all Van Winkle has some other juice in it, even 23yr.
