So why won't Japanese producers just send us more of their delightful spirit? For one, they aren't all that confident that Americans will drink their whiskey the "right" way. "Japanese whiskey distillers are very protective of their product," says Kim. "It's a made for Japanese palates, so it needs context."

As a lover of Japanese whiskies, that kind of attitude annoys me to no end.

As a lover of Japanese whiskies, that kind of attitude annoys me to no end.

But to me it seems very, very indicative of the Japanese culture for a lot of things, at least looking from the outside in. Showing proper respect demands following specific customs. But it doesn't seem to matter a tinker's damn if you really care about what you are doing as long as you can "properly" embrace the customs. Of course if you are going to go to the trouble to learn all the customs and rules it probably means you care about what you are doing.

Is the cost of Japanese whiskeys here based on import duties, or just market based pricing? I'm kinking myself for not snagging some when flying through Tokyo a bunch a few years back....before the world of whiskey opened up to me. Would like to try more than the Yamazaki 12 i've had, but MAN they can be pricey.

In this interview with the Davids of K&L, they mention that the US government

is part of the problem, citing label issues and fill levels. They say they got lucky

with the Karuizawas since Japan was filling them to 720 mls but had room to go

up to 750ml.

I can understand other countries not wanting to make special 750 sized bottles

just for the US. I suppose it's easier for "us" to fill a 750 at 700 mls (if that's

what happens) for sale overseas.
