I found some JPS 21 for $119 was wondering if it was sw juice? also is that a fair price?

Not SW juice by any account. It has received mixed reviews.

Nope, not only not S-W, but most likely rye recipe bourbon. I think $119 is on the low end. I know a few people here and there who have described it as quite decent. Don't know about you, but 'quite decent' is not really what I'm looking for for $120.

thanks for the info, if it was 17 or 18yr i wouldve jumped on it but didnt know about the 21 yr

I only have 18's and they have been smooth and enjoyable. They are still out there if you look.

I had some JPS 21 tonight. It's good, definitely a rye base bourbon. I will not buy another one. Some people thought it might have been EC21 juice ( because they came out around the same time ). I've done a side by side and they are definitely not the same bourbon. EC21 is much better.

I bought a bottle, paid $140 for it. As others have said, it is quite good, but not good enough to justify the price tag. I won't buy another bottle. Now if I find a 17 or 18 year old out there . . . different story.

I had a pour at a local watering hole. It was real smooth. I thought it was a wheated like the 17&18...WRONG. I now understand it's a rye. Looks like rye can smooth out over time. Now I guess I need to look for older Rye. Any suggestions?

Rye based older bourbons? Well, there is EC21, of course, and some of the Willett FE bottles run into the 20+ year range. Can also find older 4R single barrels at their gift shop. GTS and ER17 are fairly old as well. But all of these will be somewhat expensive. Among lower priced bourbons, 12 years is about the max that you will find.

Thank You Kyjd75! How gettable is the EC21? I would imagine that is one of those waiting list items? I am aware that FR has different yeast strains. Any thoughts? This MAY prove to prove to be easier to get.

EC21 is generally available, albeit at a price of $140+. For the various 4R variations, good sticky discussion of this on the "premium bourbon section." I participated in a barrel selection a few months ago where we ultimately went with two barrels, one of OESF and one of OBSF. Both were quite good and a little distinctive from the "regular" 4R taste. Look for private barrel selections at your local stores. I also know that HH, 4R and Willett have older bourbons available at their gift shops.

Hard to spend over $100 on any bottle of bourbon, personally.

I also do not think the JPS 21 is worth the price, but I certainly find $120 for a 21yo bourbon a much more reasonable price than a $100 craft NAS (young) release.

Thanks again for the help. Is there a location and key for the FR mash bill codes? Also it is my understanding there are different yeast strains. Is there a location for those as well?

All Jefferson's bourbon is rye based unless otherwise stated. It's been that way since they started the brand about 20 years ago. The 17yr and 18yr from a few years ago are the only wheaters they've ever released.

Edit: Nice avatar LB!
