Price variations throughout the US

The two places outside IN that I find worth shopping are #1 Louisvillle, and sometimes Chicago. Louisville has about the best selection and prices (no surprise) for stuff that isn't limited release type items. The only downside to Louisville is that knowledgeable bourbon drinkers tend to not let some items sit on a shelf too long. Chicago gets some items I don't see in my state. Generally though, IL prices seem higher than IN, and they both tend to have mostly the same products.

As another Seattle area resident I weep when I see our prices and then find out what other states charge. Thankfully I have a list of multiple merchants who ship to the state, many of which are in California which not only has some of the best prices in the country (they vary wildly but can be very low) they are also close enough that shipping usually ends up in the $4-6 per bottle range when I buy 3 or more. Also, my frequent business trips to KY last year meant I brought back many a wonderful bottle including 4 of GTS that I bought right after touring the BT distillery. I also know several people who make yearly road trips to California to visit family and who always fill up their trunks on the way back. For the previous poster there is nothing illegal about transporting alcohol across state lines, at least not here, your just supposed to pay the local tax on anything over 2 or 4 liters, I can't remember the limit.

For those that enjoy scotch the duty free stores on the WA/BC crossings often have good deals. Their bourbon/rye selections are always extremely limited but if your a fan of all kinds of whisk(e)y then your bound to find some decent deals. This year my 4 trips through the duty frees cost me something like $800 with all the good bottles I found

For the previous poster there is nothing illegal about transporting alcohol across state lines, at least not here, your just supposed to pay the local tax on anything over 2 or 4 liters, I can't remember the limit.

It does vary by state, and it is illegal here, but rarely enforced. It is also illegal to transport more than a certain amount of alcoholic beverages WITHIN the state at any one time without a permit (just don't remember the amounts, but I remember that it didn't sound like very much - maybe 3 gallons?). Probably one of those things they may decide to nail you with if you are stopped for another violation - kind of like the seatbelt thing.

IIRC, there is something similar between PA and NJ, at least that is what I remember when I lived there 15 yrs ago...

Interesting, I only researched Washington before going abroad and buying. Does it count as crossing state lines if you fly with it?
