Glenlivet 15yr French Oak - the nose on this is sour apples & smoke. As I'm nearing the end of this bottle, this expression keeps getting better and better...

Glendronach 17yr 1994 (PX) Single Cask # 260 for Spec's to finish off the night - not as syrupy as the last 15yr Glendronach PX but still very delicious

I just found a bottle of this and am having it delivered in a couple if weeks. I've heard great things about this particular bottling.

Tasted the following whisky with a couple of friends today

Clynelish A.D. Rattray single cask, 16 years old, 116.2 proof - K&L cask 8781

Glendronach, 1993 19yo Single Cask Oloroso Sherry Butt, 109.4 proof - K&L cask 490

Glenfarclas 1979 "The Family Casks" fourth fill sherry cask, 83.4 proof - K&L cask 8072

Mortlach Cheiftain’s 22 year old Single Malt, Sherry Butt, 116.2 proof - K&L cask 5160

Compass Box Delilah, 80 proof

post-8493-14489819800774_thumb.jpeg

Clynelish was a good starter and while a bit lighter with a very creamy in texture and lovely vanilla and fruit taste in a nice balance. Very pleasant and improved with a drop or two of water.

The Glendronach and Mortlach were similar sherry finished whisky with great mouthfeel and finish, a bit of an almost herbal component, long finish and a bit more spice from the Mortlach. Both improved with a touch of water but were easily drinkable at cask strength. Both were excellent.

The Glenfarclas was another complete change of pace with a rich oily mouthfeel and very little sherry component but lots of wood/leather and yet not overly so. Finish went on for a long time and was perfect without water for me. I didn't find water really added anything in this one.

The Delilah was a bit of an afterthought and was tasted last. By that time it seemed downright bland.

I'm just starting to get into the single barrel expressions by the folks like AD Rattray, Duncan Taylor, etc... and am really enjoying it. It's not that I don't like the "regular" expressions, there is just something fun about a one-of single cask release, especially at cask strength. I just had a few bottles of various ADR's delivered including a 23 year Bunnahabhain I can't wait to try.

For myself I'm sipping on some Johnny Walker Green again tonight. Really enjoying this vatted malt and am very sad they discontinued it. I know it's still available but at this point if I purchased any more bottles of anything whiskey like my wife would kill me...

Nice lineup there B!

Love the Mortlach22 but I haven't opened the 1993 KL Glendronach yet.

I've been in a scotch mode lately and that's a beautiful sight.

Had some nice offerings today.

Faultline 32 year from K&L

Arran 14 yr CS (54.7%) from K&L

The Faultline is only $100 (for a 32 year?) and has a nice balance and overall complexity. The Arran is better for the same price. Arran is an underrated brand to me.

Closing out the evening with a small pour from Balvenie TUN 1401 Batch #6 (from a generous SB soul - thanks much again my friend)... Initially, I was skeptical about this Batch #6 but am more impressed with each new pour.

Balvenie 12 Doublewood at a restaurant - first pour I've had and it is quite tasty. Cinnamon, spice, sherry on top of some fruity sweetness.

I'm so jealous, I never did find a bottle of the 6 and with the 9 out now I'm giving up hope. However, my hunt is now on for the 9 to add to my bottle of 3, if you hear of any good sources please do let me know, so few of these types of bottles make it up to the Seattle area.

I've yet to see any TUNs on the shelf in WA state :-(

I think we will have enough bottles to do an American TUN vertical soon though.

Edit: Have you had the TUN Batch 3? I'm secretly hoping you'll hate it and give me first dibs on your bottle ;-)

Ha, no, I have not cracked the batch 3 yet but given that Balvenie is some of my favorite whiskey I'm thinking I'll probably like it ;)

However, I would be amenable to sharing it with some locals ;)

If you come to our next SB gathering, I think there's a chance we'll have all three American TUN bottles there... ;-)

Baring any issues I'll go to the next Seattle area SB get together, they look like a blast! My only worry would be contributing, I have a decent size selection but they are typically not all that special, most can be found regularly.

As for the topic at hand, tonight I'm going to break out the Bowmore 15 year darkest. I'm not a huge fan of peat (its actually my wifes bottle) but sometimes they hit the spot and today is starting to feel like that kind of day. Something about spending the entire day (so far) working on a single SQL query, argh!

That must be some SQL query... You & LB can talk shop :-)

I'll bring my TUN9, LB has a TUN6 open - which just leaves a TUN3 from somebody...

Working through some bottles (inspired by MtnDew's thread on finishing bottles) - nearing the end of a bottle of JW Green

I'm glad I could inspire! I also will be having some JW green while relaxing in a bath after running the tough mudder today. A scotch sounds like the perfect tool to unwind before sleeping for a week.
