Having my first taste of Highland Park 12 tonight. A bit smoky for my taste buds though a bit of ice seemed to smooth that away. Think I'll stick to my Macallan when I'm not drinking bourbon or rye. I just prefer the sweeter profile.

I'm with you on that. The 18 mellows a bit and is a really tasty dram. If you want the sherry, try the Aberlour and Glendronach 12s for the same price or less than the Macallan.

I got a 50ml of HP18 with a 750ml of HP12 about this time last year. IMO, HP12 is great but that HP18 was really great!

I gotta agree with you there Matt, the HP18 is a phenomenal pour. It's one I always try to keep around,I was lucky enough to grab my last one at $92 which is the cheapest I've seen it in quite some time.

Really, wow, no sh*t and WTF . I've only come across one ever around here cheaper than $90 in the last 6 years. Currently $119.99 at Binny's.

There are more round bottles than the new oblong bottles around here, so much so I thought for the longest time that the round ones were the new ones...

That's funny Michael, I guess we know what people don't like in your area. I found a round bottle 18yr for $85 and a15 for $65 a couple months ago, took me all of zero seconds to scoop them up.

I have a particular spot a bit out of town that seems to get an unending supply of oblong HP18 for $65. That's got to be a pricing error, because everywhere else has it for ~$100.

Settling down with a sample of Balvenie 1401/9 to do some coding before bed. My first impression of this was in Balvenie's warehouse trying it straight out of the tun this summer, and I thought it was well worthy of the 1401 label. Second impression: still love it! Vibrant without being brash, juicy and sweet without being cloying, wood without being bitter, and accessible without being dull. Bottlings like this (see also FRSmBLE) really highlight the magic that can happen with whiskies in the care of master blenders.

I'm really starting to enjoy the Batch 9 - when I first opened it, I had it next to the 3 & 6 (opened for some time) so it wasn't really a fair comparison. But it has that liveliness you mentioned that is very compelling.

As good as I hear the old HP18 juice is, I would never buy a HP product that did not come without a DIY Viking ship funeral pyre.

Maybe I'll opt for sushi served on naked female models instead =]b

Because I wanted to but didn't get around to it last night, RBCS v PJL...

They're really both exceptional pours, but the PJL takes it all day. Can't even imagine would this would be like at RBCS proof. Even at 46% it's a much richer pour than the RB. Just tremendous stuff.

Ok so I bunkered two RBCS that I found (mis?)priced at $65. Are there different versions of the PJL and what is MSRP? I saw one for about $67. Your review is making me consider adding this to the cabinet. And let me note that I am only adding a couple of non bourbons/ryes from the Irish aisle if they are exemplary. And for the sake of my marriage/wallet/sanity I'm sure as hell not going into the Scotch aisle:grin:

Thanks Ryan. Believe you guys have me persuaded. Was the price I mentioned reasonable?

Seems alright usually I see it between $60-75 so that pretty much splits the difference.

Yes yes yes. Buy the PJL. one of the bottles I had went down faster than any bourbon. So hard to stay out of it.

As a pre-game warmup for tonight's SB festivities, I'm sipping on some Longmorn (IB: Van Wees) 57.8% from a generous SBr.
