Finishing up the night with an easy pour of one of my Top 5 Whiskies of All Time...Red Breast 12 Cask Strength. Dear God, this is a Great whiskey!

I just bought my first bottle of it this week for $54. It's being shipped, but I'm looking forward to trying it.

After seeing some good looking whisky being poured from around the world, I poured myself some from a sample of TIBS 2012 Karuizawa 1999 & 2000 'MARRYING' Cask # 2565 - 61.6%

Glenfiddich 18. I sometimes get so caught up in learning about or trying fancy and rare whiskey that I overlook the "regular" expressions. I realize that the 18 year is not exactly a bargain bottle, but for less than $100 (in this case $80 for a liter at the duty free) it's a very good dram. My palate is not as sensitive as some, or more likely I just can't put the flavors to words, but this scotch hits me with caramel, oak, and just a nice richness that I really appreciate without being over the top. The finish is a good medium length and leaves a sweetness that makes me smile.

Not a bad dram at all.

Funny you mentioned that one because I recently cracked open a Glenfiddich 15 year 200 ml I have had around for a while (bought a few 3 packs (12, 15, 18 x 200ml) years ago on a deal) and I still think it is a great whisky. Some things may not be the highest rated, most expensive or often praised but they hit all the right notes and that's all that matters.

I myself just cracked open a new Lagavulin 16 year and, maybe it needs air, is just hitting me a little 'watery' and not very interesting. I hope this isn't an example of what the newest stuff is going to be like.

Glenfiddich 15 is one of my favorite drams, it just seems to taste right. Following up on inexpensive pours from Grants, I finished off my first bottle of Monkey Shoulder. I'm likely to buy this again as the price was right for a blended malt scotch and the flavor was quite good. It's even cheap enough I can make the occasional rusty nail without worrying too much.

That is a great price for the CS - that is what the normal bottling goes for around here! Best I've seen in the CS in my neck of the woods is $68 - usually $5 to $10 higher. Either way, agree with Joe, this is a great whiskey. Might be heresy, but also takes water well and the fruit and cereal notes just explode from the glass.

I've always liked the 15 a lot too. And with the fact that I can get it for $35, it makes it even nicer.

Back to the Old Pulteney 12 and 21 this week. I really love OP and count myself lucky that I can find the 12 year old for less than $30 which is getting to be a rarity these days for quality single malts.

Royal Mile (IB) "SKYE" Single Malt 23 / 1987 - Cask # 689, 54.4%

I wonder what mystery distillery this one hails from?

Edit: Following that up with Balvenie TUN 1401 Batch 9 - I really really want to love this bottle but it only appears that I'm the Abominabo-ble Snowman showering affection on my bunny rabbit George... Only 1/3 bottle left.

Some Glenmorangie Original 10yr tonight. I really like it. Quality stuff for just under $40 a bottle.

I've always liked it too. Hi Time has it for $30. $27 during the last sale. Awesome at that price. I'm a big Glenmo fan. Just bought the 18 for $68.

I opened this Flora & Fauna Mortlach 16 tonight. While not a knockdown stunner like the K&L Mortlach 22, it comes in at a third of the price and is very good. It has a nice sherry quality to it and that distinctive Mortlach flavor, which I have come to adore. My only knock against this Flora & Fauna is that it could have been slightly higher proof as it seems just a touch thin (though I have been drinking natural cask strength stuff as of late and Yamazaki 18 now strikes me as thin also). With this available in Europe (though quantities seem limited), I am not sure how Macallan sells anything.

Sipping from a sample bottle of Rare Malts St. Magdalene 19 / 1979 63.8% - this one is a doozy... Thick, viscous, flinty sweet fruity goodness!

I can sit with a small pour this one all night.

It's disappointing we have to make an effort to get Mortlach, apparently it's value as a blending malt outweighs the potential profit from just another single label.

I think the thin mouthfeel might be the Mortlach house style - even the K&L 22 CS (which is outstanding by the way) was a little thin compared to a comparable Glendronach to me.

But like Squire, I would like to see more of it readily available.

Some cool stuff here. I should stop in more often. Just worked 58 hours in 4 days and am quite burned out, but happy to be off tomorrow. I had some 4R 125th w/ a small late dinner, but decided to go with some single malt to watch more of Breaking Bad Season 4. Johnny, how far are you? After this I plan on moving on to Macallan Cask Strength.

Just nosing it brings back good memories. And so much milder than Bourbon. Sipping it from a Glencairn. This reminds me why I love Scotch. Might even get into the Loki later.
