Thoughts on the barrel proof 134 and the Rye?

Buffalo Trace. The bourbon is the same recipe as Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Stagg, Benchmark, etc. The rye is a different recipe from Sazerac Rye, I don't recall the difference off hand but do a search and it should come up.

To answer the question, I haven't had the CHT barrel proof, but I have had the rye and I like it. Expensive for what it is, but tasty.

CEHTBP is one of the few bourbons I've had that improved with a cube of ice. Give it a try.

I have had the single barrel and I like it so much that I went back to get several more bottles. My bottle of the single barrel didn't last long.

Edit: I thought I would link a review with tasting notes that I felt are pretty close to what I experienced.

I'll chime in, I loved the EHT Tornado, I bunkered several. Definitely my favorite of the bunch. I enjoy the Rye and it's definitely unique when compared with other Ryes. That being said, I've had heart burn bringing an actual bottle home at $70-80. Picked it up off the shelf a few times but never pulled the trigger. At $50, I'd probably have a few. The bottle of barrel proof I had was hot and I was unable to tame it. I felt like I was fighting the bottle the entire time. Neat, ice, water, cocktails, . . . nothing I did made it enjoyable to me. That being said, I had one of the first releases. There seems to be more favorable reviews of the more recent stuff, I'm assuming it is a second release, not sure if that is the case or not, after fighting through one bottle, I haven't followed the barrel proof since. Single barrel has been just that, a single barrel offering with a wide range of tastes, had a few I loved and a few I didn't. I wish they'd label the bottles so you could go back for more of what you liked.

As for the Sour Mash, I have a bottle, but haven't yet cracked it, been busy moving and dealing with some med issues, so it's been on the back burner for several weeks. I have not had the small batch yet, I'll get around to it, but that one seems to always get overshadowed by something new and shiny every time I consider it.

I like the small batch. I got it for $34 and I'll probably buy a couple more at that price.

Dang it, looks like I chose poorly. I have a bottle (unopened) of the small batch I picked up on a whim and I have two bottles of the barrel proof (also unopened) I ordered after reading a good review and finding them out of stock almost everywhere online, and non local. Now it sounds like I should have avoided the barrel proof and small batch and went for the single barrel and rye instead, both of which I could find easily, at least at the time.

Oh well, we will see how they taste once I pop the top. Maybe I'll crack that small batch this weekend since it's readily available and sorta inexpensive if I want another.

Sounds like the barrel proof is going to be an adventure to try to break down? I, like the

rest of you, will try to find the sweet spot!

Loved Sour Mash, thought Tornado was okay, single barrel was meh.

What really strikes be about CEHT, is that just like Stagg Jr., BT has figured out the surge in premium Bourbon, so they're using fancy packaging/marketing to pass off $20-$30 Bourbon for $50 and up. I feel that any new "premium" labels that BT puts out going forward will be even bigger rip-offs.

They understand the market better than all the other majors, IMHO, and they're taking advantage of that. I'm not blaming them for making a buck, but think about this: If the BTAC didn't already exist, and it was being launched tomorrow, the suggested retail would be $150, and they'd probably sell out, except for Handy, which always hangs around.

One man's opinion:

I think anybody that hasn't tried it this way yet needs to give the Barrel Proof a few slow, really small sips NEAT!

I found it to be lovely and complex that way, and the finish lasts and lasts. I know drinking a dram of that strength neat isn't everybody's cup of tea, but for the sake of adventure; try it that way. I love it! I'd even say it's my favorite of the Brand-Family.
